Ein Winzersohn, der sich zum Medienmogul hocharbeitet und dann am Ende wieder alles verliert - in der größten deutschen Firmenpleite der Nachkriegsgeschichte. Markus Preiß analysiert in seinem Buch, wie die Karriere des Leo Kirch möglich wurde und beschreibt ausführlich, welche Besonderheiten der Medienproduktion die Entwicklung begünstigt haben. Dazu zählen auch die vielen klugen Schachzüge Kirchs, der jahrelang einen erbitterten Kampf mit ARD und ZDF um den Einkauf von Hollywood-Rechten führte - es aber zugleich verstand, den Sendern die eingekauften Rechte dann wieder zu verkaufen. Doch Kirch traf auch Fehlentscheidungen. Die gravierendste war wohl, den Ausbau des Privatfernsehens zu forcieren. Die Etablierung neuer Sender war der Wendepunkt in der Unternehmensgeschichte: Statt lediglich, wie von Kirch geplant, seine Ware zu kaufen, boten die neuen Programme nun selbst für Hollywood-Rechte und suchten nach anderen Programminhalten. Das forcierte den Wettbewerb, Gewinne schmolzen - um konkurrenzfähig zu sein, musste Kirch seine komfortable Situation als reiner Filmhändler verlassen und selbst Programme veranstalten. Die Investitionen in neue Sender, nicht zuletzt in den Pay-TV-Kanal Premiere und die hohen Lizenzgebühren, die Kirch für Hollywood-Filme zahlte, um sein Monopol im Filmhandel zu sichern, führten zu einem gewaltigen Schuldenberg und letztlich zur Pleite. Markus Preiß nimmt die Geschichte des Kirch-Konzerns aus medienökonomischer Sicht detailliert unter die Lupe - eine Geschichte, die wirklich filmreif ist.
About the Author: Markus Preiß wurde 1978 in Heiligenstadt/Thüringen geboren. Schon während der Schulzeit begann er mit der journalistischen Arbeit: erst Lokalzeitung, später Süddeutsche Zeitung und Handelsblatt. Es folgte von 1997 bis 2002 das Studium der Journalistik und Politikwissenschaft an der Universität Dortmund, zwischenzeitlich Volontariat beim WDR. In diesen Jahren wuchs sein Interesse an wirtschaftlichen Fragen und die Faszination für große Unternehmerpersönlichkeiten. Solche, die mit feinem Gespür Marktchancen witterten und die Kraft hatten, daraus Profit zu schlagen. So entstand die vorliegende Studie. Markus Preiß arbeitet inzwischen als Fernsehjournalist für die Tagesschau und die Tagesthemen. Er lebt in Köln.
