About the Book

English summary: Revolutions, disasters and crumbling empires call the prevailing order into question. Under severe time pressure and when going through exceptional emotions people look for both new and old forms of stability. But what is it that motivates their search? The special research group 923 'Bedrohte Ordnungen' (order under threat) at the University of Tubingen examines societies under stress, from antiquity to the present and in different regions of the world. It draws on the latest research results regarding revolutions and disasters and includes approaches from different cultural fields in order to determine the characteristics of social change. The group is particularly interested in understanding spatial and temporal patterns of social order. After two years of research the SFB 923 now presents the key questions and first results arising from an international conference. Concepts of communication in situations of threat and of temporal concentration have been provided. The four project areas 'riot', 'disaster', 'decomposition of order' and 'competition of orders' are introduced by means of various case studies that range beyond the boundaries of traditionally defined epochs. In addition, cultural theories related to order under threat are applied to the subjects of emotion, revolution, resilience and latency.
