About the Book

A jaguar and a sloth make a treaty. Mr. Truth goes on holiday. Villagers decide how they will spend their last few minutes before the apocalypse. Death and Life are exposed as old college buddies. Three haiku masters travel through time and meet at a theatre. A farm worker wonders if the desert was meant to be inhabited. The enigmatic Queen Vashti becomes an icon. Those are a few of the characters and their foibles readers will find in Auditions For The Afterlife, a collection of poems that explore topics such as death, love, nature, metaphysics, pop culture, history, religion, and more with depth, humor, and candor. Styles range from free verse and formal verse to lyrics and narratives while maintaining a consistent, distinctive voice.
About the Author: Hugh Lemma was born in Philadelphia, PA. He grew up just across the bridge in the quintessential small town of Clementon, NJ., where he attended Catholic school, worked in the family refrigeration business, and enrolled in community college. When his psychology professor assigned the class Freudian dream journals, Hugh began recording his dreams in verse. From there, he never looked back. Always a voracious reader, he began to devour works by Sylvia Plath, Charles Bukowski, Pablo Neruda, Dorothy Parker, Wilfred Owen, and many other poets. Though Hugh left college shortly after, and continued his career in transport refrigeration, he continued to write poetry and prose. He met his future wife, Colleen, at a bible study. They raised four kids together, and moved to central Arizona in 2005. They have since become grandparents. In 2008, Hugh joined a poetry workshop, where he honed his craft, developed his voice, and wrote many of the pieces that appear in his first book, "Auditions For The Afterlife".
