About the Book

The Aspens is the second novel in the 'Better Than A Known Way' series. In the little high mountain town of Bugler, neighbors care for one another and the occasional stranger who come into their midst. This was the case with Ethan, the young boy who was being severely abused by a couple who was hiding in an abandoned cabin outside town. As the story unfolds, a serious accident occurred during the construction of Mark and Elise's new home - and there was no doctor nearer than Laramie, a train trip away. A kidnap attempt was foiled and a U. S. Marshal came to town to investigate. Then later midwives assisted in bringing new life with joy to the village. During that time there were wildfires, wars and bank failures that caused people to bond together to make a difference for good in one another's lives. Elise and Mark provide a continuing story of love and devotion which survived adversity and well-intentioned relatives. Neighbors comment how frequently the couple brings an element of surprise and joy to their little town. And romance seems to be in the air for a few other characters as well. Share the excitement of accomplishments as the villagers and ranchers rally together in a time of crisis.
About the Author: The author lives in the Midwest where she grew up on a farm during the Great Depression. There was no electricity, indoor plumbing, central heating or telephone. Life was difficult but family oriented with much community support in those times. Farmers worked from dawn to dark. Home grown beef and hogs provided meat, and there were cows for milk. Their wives tended large vegetable gardens and raised chickens for food and eggs in addition to the household chores and caring for their children. Small, one-room country schools provided a good basic education and a meeting place for once a month socials. Doris became interested in family history and experiences at a young age and enjoys reading and researching earlier times in the United States. Her goal in writing these stories is to depict real life in our country at the turn of the century into the early 1900's. She says writing this continuing story has been a joy, with occasional surprises at an unexpected change of circumstances and responses from the characters.
