Un viejo e ilustre profesor de apellido Braun ha sido estrangulado en su casita de campo. Su casero y un vecino descubren con gran sorpresa el cadáver y denuncian el crimen a la policía.
El caso es tomado por el Comisario Videla apoyado por el fiscal Balbo, un hombre muy apasionado a su trabajo y de gran capacidad intuitiva.
Se descubre que el asesinado había sido oficial de la SS en la segunda guerra mundial y que el mismo Himmler le había encargado la importante misión de incautar colecciones de especies vegetales del famoso científico ruso Vavilov.
Después de la guerra, Braun había sido contratado en Argentina en el Departamento de Investigaciones Científicas y, posteriormente había trabajado en varios países, destacándose por su labor de investigador.
Las hipótesis para aclarar el crimen son numerosas, pero todas carecen de suficiente consistencia.
No parece un caso de asalto con fines de robo, ya que la casa no ha sido desvalijada. Es difícil creer que el casero, que vivía a poca distancia de la casa del investigador alemán, no haya escuchado nada de lo ocurrido, teniendo en cuenta que el asesinato fue precedido por torturas. Se piensa, en consecuencia, que esté implicado como autor o cómplice.
Las hipótesis de la prensa que apuntan a crimen político ligado a venganzas por los antecedentes nazis de la víctima parecen inconsistentes, debido al largo tiempo pasado desde el fin de la segunda guerra mundial.
La investigación aporta datos importantes. El profesor sufrió en la década de los sesenta, en Venezuela, la pérdida de su esposa y un hijo, en un accidente de auto que probablemente fue un atentado contra su vida. Podría atribuirse este suceso a sus imprudentes andanzas en zona de selva, en la frontera con Colombia, donde se escondían cultivos clandestinos de coca, dominadas por narcos y guerrilleros.
El profesor, que había logrado sobrevivir al atentado, siguió su peregrinaje en varios países desde Suráfrica a Canadá, siempre desempeñándose como botánico y genetista.
Se abre la sospecha de diferentes motivos de asesinato.
El comisario Videla y el hábil fiscal Balbo, a pesar de la complejidad del caso, seguían tenazmente en su búsqueda de nueva información, reconstruyendo la trayectoria laboral del profesor.
Descubren que había realizado una denuncia a la embajada de Alemania en Paraguay en contra de una empresa que loteaba y vendía tierra degradada, engañando con falsa publicidad a ahorristas alemanes.
Podía ser otro motivo del crimen para silenciar al denunciante por su condición de testigo peligroso, aunque no se justificaba la tortura previa.
El descubrimiento de que dos sicarios de un conocido narcotraficante local habían estado espiando la casa de la víctima, pocos días antes del crimen, parece aportar una solución a la investigación. Sin embargo, también esta pista fracasa cuando se descubre que las huellas dactilares de los dos matones no corresponden con las encontradas en el lugar del crimen.
Por fin el fiscal, gracias a la información recibida por un científico que había trabajado con Braun en Canadá, logra confirmar el verdadero motivo del crimen y, sobre esa certeza, puede identificar el mandante y los autores materiales.
