No entanto, não foi para os pesquisadores e historiadores do presente que os jornais do passado escreveram; não somos nós os seus "leitores-modelo", como afirma Claudio Pereira Elmir. Somos nós que, entretanto, trazemos à vida as manifestações que esses jornais veicularam. Dessa forma, o presente livro aborda como as tentativas de implantação do divórcio absoluto no Brasil, ao final do século XIX e início do XX, foram abordados pelos jornais rio-grandinos. A imprensa de determinado lugar ou região " é reflexo e segmento da própria sociedade a que serve", afirma Alberto Dines. Para esse mesmo autor, os veículos de comunicação tem um compromisso com seu público leitor que não lhes permite desviar ou mudar o foco de suas notícias sem pensar nesse mesmo público, sob pena de perde-lo, afirmando inclusive que é o "leitor que escolhe o estilo, a orientação e a linha dos respectivos jornais".Como Dines, compactuo da idéia de que foi este referencial e interdependência ao seu público leitor, que motivou a escrita do Echo do Sul, Diário do Rio Grande e Artista a escreverem sobre o tema divórcio da forma que o fizeram. Esta publicação está estruturada em quatro capítulos. O primeiro deles tenta situar a gênese do casamento civil e do divórcio, bem como a fala dos jornais sobre essas duas condições, permitindo recuperar o momento em que se pensa na adoção do divórcio absoluto e como ele já vinha sendo adotado em outros países. No segundo capítulo a proposta é a de dar voz ao jornal de modo que se pudesse expor o pensamento dos mesmos sobre o tema divórcio e de que maneira esse mesmo tema apareceu na imprensa. A importância da família, da mulher e da Igreja são abordados nesse terceiro capítulo, onde se pretendeu mostrar de que modo os discursos se apropriaram dessas concepções para justificar ou rechaçar o divórcio. O quarto e último capítulo se propõe analisar o peso da tradição, da moral e dos costumes como fator preponderante nos escritos jornalísticos em análise. Claro ficou que a visão de mundo que prevaleceu nos escritos jornalísticos foi a que fundava-se na tradição e na moral cristã, sustentada no tripé tradição - família - religião, como pressuposto norteador; no entanto os novos tempos se avizinhavam e o Artista não deixou de lembrar à comunidade que a mudança aconteceria, cedo ou tarde, de forma gradual ou imposta, mas aconteceria. Atualmente é professora associada da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande, onde é coordenadora adjunta do Programa de Pós-Graduação em História.
