Moral ist keine Geschmacksache. So wie in den Naturwissenschaften können wir auch in der Ethik echtes Wissen erreichen; hier wie da hat der Relativismus nicht das letzte Wort. Mit dieser These verteidigt Olaf L. Müller die Respektatibilität unserer moralischen Erkenntnisbemühungen. Im Teil I vergleicht er die Erkenntnisquellen für Naturwissenschaft und Ethik; auf beiden Gebieten gibt es Wissen aus Beobachtung. So, wie wir durch Blick auf die Welt unsere Meinungen über sichtbare Hasen rechtfertigen können, so können wir ebenfalls durch Blick auf die Welt unsere Meinungen über sichtbares Unrecht rechtfertigen. Wer einen Hasen sehen will, braucht dafür offene Augen und Beobachtungstraining, er braucht kein eigenes Hasen-Sinnesorgan. Und wer sichtbares Unrecht sehen will, braucht abermals offene Augen und Beobachtungstraining, er braucht wieder keinen eigenen Sensor für Unrecht. Nicht alle naturwissenschaftlichen Sätze lassen sich durch Beobachtung rechtfertigen; genauso in der Moral. Daher müssen für beide Bereiche zusätzliche Erkenntnisquellen postuliert werden, und sie funktionieren beidemal gleich. Im Teil II nimmt der Autor die Unterschiede zwischen Naturwissenschaft und Ethik in den Blick. Ethische Sätze sind inniger mit unserm Tun verknüpft als naturwissenschaftliche Sätze. Aber auch diese Besonderheit der Moral hat ihren guten Platz im sparsam naturalistischen Rahmen, in dem sich die gesamte Untersuchung bewegt. Der Autor führt vor, wie sich moralische Meinungsverschiedenheiten und Unterschiede der Moralsprache auseinanderdividieren lassen, und zwar selbst unter den schwierigen Bedingungen der radikalen ÜberSetzung à la Quine. Das Bild, das Olaf L. Müller vom moralischen Diskurs zeichnet, lässt Platz für moralischen Dissens zwischen den Kulturen; so viel Dissens kommt in der Naturwissenschaft nicht vor. Dass so ein Dissens unsere Hoffnungen auf moralisches Wissen nicht zerstören muss, sondern fördern kann, ist eine der Pointen dieses optimistischen Buchs.
