Artemis Smith is a classic cult figure in the LGBT/Queer movement. She considers herself "unisex" or post-gender and doesn't fit neatly into pre-made queer categories.... She became an important voice in the gay rights, feminist and antiracism movement of the '50s.......The novel (Anne Loves Beth) has a wonderful slice-of-life sensibility, capturing the political and cultural atmosphere of the 1950's in an intimate way. It represents the days when LGBT gatherings were held deep underground for fear of police raids as well as homophobic street violence, but love still found a way to bloom under extremely difficult circumstances.
