Toman no solo la ayuda profesional psicológica, sino también el vínculo más amplio que se establece en todas las actividades de servicio personal, incluyendo las relaciones de la vida cotidiana, en el campo del amor, la amistad, la familia, los amigos, el trabajo. Se trata de relaciones en las que una persona afectada por un dolor o un daño acude a otra con la que está dispuesta a compartir su problema para recibir una ayuda que le permita salir de su padecimiento. Se parte de una premisa: para poder comprender el dolor o daño del otro y poder ayudarlo, el que ayuda ha de haber sufrido. En la medida en que todos conocemos el sufrimiento, todos podemos ayudar. Pero haber sufrido no es suficiente. "Tenemos que haber sido capaces de saber qué hacer con ese sufrimiento, para a su vez poder saber qué hacer o no hacer, con el sufrimiento del otro". No basta la buena voluntad y la buena intención. Dicen las autoras que, aliviar, cuidar, consolar, si no es la acción apropiada o el momento indicado, tiene un efecto debilitador y contraproducente. A veces la verdadera ayuda es aquella que renuncia a ayudar. El lector se sentirá tocado por la exhaustiva ejemplificación que se hace en este libro acerca del vínculo entre "ayudador" y "ayudado" y sus interferencias -llamadas inquietantemente "trampas"- que distorsionan el proceso de la ayuda. Porque la ayuda se produce dentro de un proceso vincular en el que debe mediar la confianza recíproca. Es la calidad del vínculo que se establece en el proceso, y gracias al desarrollo de ciertas cualidades descriptas también exhaustivamente, lo que permitirá vislumbrar un camino para ir más allá de esas "trampas" .La concepción de ayuda aquí expuesta, abreva en las grandes líneas de desarrollo espiritual tanto del pensamiento occidental como la teosofía, el misticismo oriental, el budismo zen y el advaita vedanta.Podríamos decir que las autoras, a través de este libro, conceptualizan la propia experiencia mantenida entre ellas a lo largo de más de veinticinco años. Como se ha dicho, todo libro es autobiográfico. Como amigas y colegas profesionales en servicios de ayuda personal, desarrollaron entre ellas una relación de ayuda, compartiendo saberes y emociones que hoy nos ofrecen con generosidad.
