About the Book

Ar 6 Hydref, 1834, yn 15 oed, aeth Anna Cora Ogden gyda James Mowatt (1805-1851), cyfreithiwr amlwg a cyfoethog yn Efrog Newydd. Symudasant i ystâd yn Flatbush, Efrog Newydd, lle'r oedd ei gŵr yn ei hannog i barhau â'i haddysg ac i ysgrifennu.Cyhoeddwyd llyfr cyntaf Anna Cora Mowatt, Pelayo, neu Cavern Covadonga, yn 1836, yna Adolygwyr adolygwyr yn 1837 gan ddefnyddio'r pseudonym "Isabel". Ysgrifennodd erthyglau a gyhoeddwyd yn Graham's Magazine a Llyfr Lady Godey a chyfnodolion eraill. Ysgrifennodd ddrama chwe gweithred, Gulzara, a gyhoeddwyd yn New World. O dan y pseudonym Henry C. Browning, ysgrifennodd fywgraffiad o Goer. Gan ddefnyddio'r pseudonym "Helen Berkley", ysgrifennodd ddwy nofel: The Fortune Hunter ac Evelyn. Mae Evelyn wedi'i hysgrifennu yn yr arddull epistolary. Yn 1841, oherwydd problemau ariannol, daeth Anna yn ddarllenydd cyhoeddus. Mynychwyd ei pherfformiad cyntaf gan Edgar Allan Poe, a ysgrifennodd ohoni, "Mae gwên fwy rad radly hardd yn eithaf amhosibl ei dychmygu." Roedd ei darlleniadau'n boblogaidd ac yn cael eu mynychu'n dda, ond roedd ei gyrfa fel darllenydd yn fyrhoedlog oherwydd problemau anadlu. Wrth wella o'i salwch, dychwelodd i'w hysgrifennu.Amgryptio Anna Cora Mowatt fel Beatrice yn Llawer ado Shakespeare Am DdimYn 1845, cyhoeddwyd ei gwaith mwyaf adnabyddus, y ddrama Fasclustogan[5]. Cafodd adolygiadau rag ac agorodd yn Theatr y Parc, Efrog Newydd, ar 24 Mawrth, 1845. Ar 13 Mehefin, 1845, gwnaeth gam gyrfa arall i weithredu, dadleuodd yn Theatr y Parc fel Pauline yn The Lady of Lyons gyda llwyddiant mawr. Er i'w drama nesaf, Armand, Plentyn y Bobl gael ei chyhoeddi yn 1847, a chafodd adolygiadau da hefyd, parhaodd yn ei gyrfa actio. Perfformiodd rolau blaenllaw yn Shakespeare (er enghraifft, mewn cynhyrchiad o Cymbeline yn Llundain, 1843), melodramas, a'i dramâu ei hun. Bu'n ymweld â'r Unol Daleithiau ac Ewrop am yr wyth mlynedd nesaf.''Beth allai merch o bymtheg wybod am ddyletswyddau sanctaidd gwraig? Gyda pha lygaid y gallai ddeall y bywyd newydd a phwysig yr oedd yn mynd iddo? Nid oedd wedi gwybod dim ond prin fod plentyndod wedi dechrau ei girlhood. Beth allai hi ei ddeall o'r treialon, y gofalwyr, y gobeithion, cyfrifoldebau'r fenyw? Ni feddyliais am yr un o'r pethau hyn. Yr oeddwn bob amser wedi cael fy ysgafnhau i'r pwynt o wamalrwydd. Fel arfer, gwneuthum jest o bopeth - ac eto nid edrychais ar y mater hwn fel rhewllyd. Dim ond cofio fy mod yn cadw addewid yr oeddwn yn ei gofio. Yr oedd gennyf ffydd berffaith yn y tendr y cyfyngais arno fy hun. Nid oeddwn yn y lleiaf o wireddu newydd-deb fy sefyllfa.''
