About the Book

Desperate for a job, Marcie Parker is thrilled when she's hired as director of a halfway house for recovering alcoholic women. Then she meets the housemother, Deborah, an angry dwarf who dislikes Marcie on the spot and sets out to make her life miserable. Nevertheless, Marcie fills the house with a mixed bag of women: Pearl, the uneducated country woman with a world of common sense; Veronica, a flamboyant former actress always ready with a wisecrack; Missy, whose evangelical father disowned her because she left her husband, Neither man knows she's gay; Phyllis, the homemaker who drowned her empty nest with whiskey; Cassie, a homeless, high school dropout who suffers from an obsessive-compulsive disorder; Clara, a one-armed woman who started keeping company with the bootlegger when she lost her job; Georgia Lu, a coarse giant of a woman who has been in too many drunken car wrecks. Religion in one form or another has affected most of these women. Enter Pastor Jacob Horner who, much to Marcie's dismay, holds a "spiritual enrichment" program once a week. As a welcomed distraction, an unexpected romance blooms between Marcie and her boss's assistant, Roger McCandliss. Never, not for one moment, does Marcie fear for her life. But a psychotic killer lurks among them. It takes finally getting on Deborah, the housemother's good side to find out who.
About the Author: Before pursuing her dream of becoming a writer, Mary Kay Remick raised four children, lived in nine states, sold real estate, managed an electronic company and, after completing her education at the University of Alabama/Huntsville, where she studied psychology and sociology, and at A&M University, where she studied guidance and counseling, served as a certified substance abuse specialist in the state mental health system. She directed an in-patient treatment program for indigent male alcoholics and later directed a program for females. After retiring, Remick devoted herself to writing full time. Her short stories and articles won awards and appeared in numerous regional publications. But it took ten years for her first novel to appear in print. SEARCHING FOR BLANCHE (based on Tennesse William's A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE)won rave reviews and an option from Tri-Star Columbia for film rights. The option lapsed when the Writer's Guild went on strike. Her second novel, SWEET AND SOUR is about two female cousins who grew up hating each other but who come together in middle age to seek revenge on a snake-handling preacher. By poplular demand, Remick next wrote a sequel to the Blanche book, THE SPIRIT IN WASHINGTON SQUARE. All three novels are available on Amazon.com in both book and Kindle form. Her latest novel, WHERE ARE THE WOMEN, is a departure from earlier works in that it is a psychological suspense that takes place in a halfway house for females. Remick and her husband, Jack, love to travel, both in the U.S. and abroad. Barcelona, Spain is one of their favorite destinations. They are also avid readers, and Mary Kay belongs to a duplicate bridge club and AAUW. They live in northeast Alabama with their two Bichons.
