Stunden reichere Notizen zu Gebote, so wurde sich hier noch mancher Name der Herz�ge von Devonshire, Dorset, Richmond, der Lords Bessborough, Cawdor, Exeter, Holland, Palmerston, Ro'ckingham, Temple, Yarbo rough, Sir Will. Strickland, W. Lock, Hor. Walpole u. S. W. Mit gr�sserer Sicherheit an reihen lassen. Indessen m�gen mit obigen Namen doch wohl die bedeutendsten derjenigen englischen Sammler hervorgehoben sein, welche ihre Sch�tze vorzugsweise Hamilton, Jenkins und deren Genossen verdankten. In dem letzten Jahrzehnt des vorigen Jahrhunderts erreichte diese Zeit ihr Ende. Das Museo Pio Clementino stand der Hauptsache nach abgeschlossen da, die Kriege der franz�sischen Re publik �berzogen Italien, der Friede von Tolentino (19 Februar 1797) und die Art seiner Handhabung durch die Sieger beraubten Rom seiner sch�nsten Antiken. F�r zwei Jahrzehnte trat Paris an die Stelle Roms. Byres hatte Rom schon l�nger ver lassen; Gavin Hamilton starb im Jahre jenes Frie dens, als die Franzosen sich Rom n�herten; Jen kins' Habe ward von den Eroberern mit Beschlag belegt, er selbst musste fliehen und starb, kaum gelandet, in Yarmouth Ausgrabungen und Antikenhandel stockten darum freilich doch nicht: ganz; Fagan z. B. Grub mit gliicklichem Erfolg in Ostia. Um diese Zeit scheint Thomas H0pe die Sammlung gebildet zu haben, welche lange sein Londoner Haus schm�ckte (s. U. Deepdene). Er war auch neben Lord Cawdor der erste Privat mann in England, welcher (1801) eine gr�ssere Vasensammlung erwarb, die zweite Sammlung desenglischen Gesandten in Neapel Sir William Ha milton (1730 welche dieser 1796 ver gebens in Berlin f�r 7000 L. St. Angeboten Die erste hatte er schon 1772 zugleich mit einer 1ci chen Sammlung von Terracotten, Bronzen, M�nzen, Gemmen und anderen Anticaglien f�r 8400 L. St. An das britische Museum verkauft; sie hatte die Muster f�r Wedgwood's ber�hmte Topferwaaren ge liefert. Bekanntlich r�hrt der d104, welcher die Publication dieser ersten Sammlung verunziert, von d'hancarville her, demselben, welcher auf Townley so grossen Einfluss aus�bte und ebenso auf Richard Payne Knight (1749 1824) 3e') sch�dlich gewirkt hat. So une1freulieh zum Theil eben aus diesem Grunde des letzte1en schriftstelle1ische Leistungen sind so eigenth�mlich ist das Vadienst, das e1 sich als Sammler erwarb. Fast ausschliesslich wa1en es kleinere Bronze'n (die erste kaufte er 1785, s. Speo. L, 20 f.) und griechische M�nzen, die er sam melte, darunter aber eine Menge ganz vorz�glicher St�cke: Marmor verschm�hte er im Ganzen; aber gerade bei der herrschenden Vorliebe f�r grossere Skulpturen ist Knight's Liebhaberei f�r jene kleine ren Kunstwerke doppelt hoch anzuschlagen. End lich l�sst die Liberalit�t, mit welcher er diesen ganzen Schatz bedingungslos dem britischen Museum vermachte, Manches vergessen, was er als Schrift steller und als langj�hriges Orakel des "guten Ge schmackes in England, z. B. Durch seine beschr�nkte Opposition gegen Lord Elgin's Kunstwerke, ges�n digt hat.
