Die folgende kleine Abhandlung wird mit Absicht nur als Vortrag ver- öffentlicht, so wie er am 25. November 1970 gehalten wOl1den ist. Sie soll vor allem zwei heute von maßgebenden Seiten vertretene Hypothesen über den raumgeschichtlichen Ursprung der christlichen Basilika überprüf, en. Die für die Ausbildung des Baukörpers der Basilika in Betracht kommenden Raumformen sollen deshalb vollständiger zusammengestellt werden, als das in dem während des Kl1ieges verfaßten Artikel in Klausers Reallex'ikon für die Spätantike und das frühe Christentum möglich war (RAC I 1124). über die praktisch-pastorale Seite des Problems werden die Liturgiehistoriker sachkundiger urteilen. Die Arbeit über die Kirchenbauten Konstantins in historischer Sicht von Uwe Süssenbach wird auch auf die frühen Bezeichnungen für den Kirchen- bau und die Bedeutungsmöglichkeiten, des Wortes Basilica eingehen. Süssen- bach danke ich die überprüfung der Zitate. Johannes Straub, dem besten Kenner der Spätantike, bin ich dankbar verbunden für viele freundschaft- liche Diskussionen über das weitschichtJige Problem und nicht zuletzt auch dafür, daß er die Widmung dieses libellum angenommen hat. So seltsam es klingt: der baugeschichtliche Ursprung der christlichen Basi- lika ist bis heute noch umstritten und ungeklärt 1. Viele der früheren Ablei- tungsversuche des Bautyps vom römischen Atriumhaus, dem griechischen Peristylhof oder dem Memorienbau sind heute überwunden. Andere werden noch diskutiert, vor allem die Annahme der J antzenschule, der christliche Kirchenbau sei entscheidend angeregt, ja bestimmt worden durch die beson- ders in Syrien häufigen spätantiken Säulenstraßen wie in Apamaea ood Pal- myra (Taf. 1. 1).
