About the Book

Interesting links between the Czech architectural avant-garde and European Modernism and an intense correspondence with his Czech colleague Karel Teige prompted Adolf Behne to remark that it was now 'really time to learn Czech'. This is the first German-language publication of the architectural theories and manifests of Czech avant-garde architecture in the period of the first Czech Republic (1918-1938). The anthology includes contributions by J. Krejcar, J. Kroha, J. Mukarovsky', V. Obrtel, K. Teige as well as Le Corbusier's responses to the latter. The texts were first published in architectural monographs and journals and are of a unique quality within the context of the European avant-garde. There is a brief introduction to the authors and all the texts are commented. The introduction describes the cultural and social background.
