Anschließend wird der Begriff des Unternehmenserfolgs definiert, der als Maßstab für die Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage gilt. Zur Quantifizierung des Unternehmenserfolgs wird die Eigenkapital- und Gesamtkapitalrentabilität zusammen mit der optimalen Kapitalstruktur unter Berücksichtigung des Leverage-Effekts determiniert. Der Theorieteil beinhaltet des Weiteren Erläuterungen, warum eine ideale Positionierung am Markt und im Wettbewerb in der heutigen Zeit den ausschlaggebenden Einflussfaktor auf den Unternehmenserfolg darstellt. Im praktischen Teil der Arbeit werden die getroffenen theoretischen Vorüberlegungen als Grundlage für die Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage genutzt. Zunächst wird analysiert, welche Position Apple im Branchenwettbewerb innehat und mit welchen strategischen Maßnahmen das Unternehmen versucht, sich von der Konkurrenz zu unterscheiden. Daraufhin wird anhand der zuvor definierten Rentabilitätskennzahlen ein möglicher Unternehmenserfolg Apples quantifiziert und mit Konkurrenzwerten verglichen. Durch die Analyse der Kapitalstruktur des Unternehmens werden weiterhin die kausalen Zusammenhänge zwischen den ermittelten Kennziffern und der Kapitalstruktur des Unternehmens offengelegt. Am Ende der Arbeit soll der Unternehmenserfolg Apples erklärt und begründet werden. Dafür werden die zuvor ausgewerteten Kennzahlen mit den strategischen Entscheidungen des Unternehmens in Verbindung gebracht und bezugnehmend auf die vorliegende Forschungsfrage bewertet. Auf Grundlage der vorangegangenen Analyse im Praxisteil wird abschließend versucht, die zukünftige Erfolgslage des Konzerns zu prognostizieren.
