About the Book

English summary: In this fifth volume of his series on the history of Rome, Appian narrates the civil wars involving Julius Caesar, Lucius Antonius, Sextus Pompey, and Anthony, preceding the end of the Republic and the rise of Empire. Appian places his work under the sign of Destiny, and understood history as a linear track guided by Destiny; in this case, the return of monarchy, of which the young Caesar would be the inevitable instrument.
