De quoi s'agit-il dans ce livre ? Ce livre, Apologie pour la Loi de Dieu, a comme sous-titre: Introduction aux Dix Commandements, c'est-à-dire aux volumes que nous consacrons à l'étude détaillée des dix paroles du Décalogue. Il fut pourtant rédigé au cours des années 1980 et 1990 et publié en février 1996 aux Éditions L'Âge d'Homme à Lausanne. Il s'agit d'une série d'ouvrages en voie de publication dont celui consacré au huitième commandement est disponible. Ces études furent en premier lieu prononcées comme prédications mensuelles à l'Assemblée évangélique de Sion, cela au cours de douze années et demie, du 11 février 2001 au 16 juin 2013. Nous remercions le pasteur André Rentmeister pour la confiance avec laquelle il accorda si longtemps à l'auteur l'hospitalité de la chaire dont il était responsable. Une première partie, comprenant une douzaine de chapitres relativement courts, présente la Loi divine de manière simple afin de mieux en faire comprendre la portée véritable. Ils montrent, contrairement à des opinions erronées largement répandues, que la Loi divine résumée par les dix paroles du Décalogue n'est d'aucune manière opposée à une conception, tout à la fois chrétienne et raisonnable, de l'amour, de la liberté, du salut, de la grâce, de cette loi naturelle qui est l'ordre stable de la création, de la conscience humaine, de l'alliance divine avec les hommes, de l'ordre législatif juste. Nous y montrons également que cette bonne, sainte et juste Loi n'est autre qu'une figure de Celui qui est le Juste par excellence, notre Sauveur et Seigneur Jésus-Christ que nous confessons être, en une seule Personne divine, le Fils éternel de Dieu, incarné en Jésus de Nazareth. La suite du livre, en des chapitres plus amples, en vient d'abord à décrire le caractère de cette Loi - distincte, mais inséparable de la Grâce de Dieu -, son rôle et sa signification au coeur de toute la théologie chrétienne, cela tant pour l'Ancien que pour le Nouveau Testament. Finalement, par une série d'études ponctuelles, il évoque la nature des adversaires innombrables de la Loi de Dieu qui, aujourd'hui comme par le passé, cela au sein comme hors du Christianisme, cherchent à en falsifier la nature et à en détruire l'influence. Cet ouvrage sert donc - mieux que son auteur ne l'imaginait lors de sa première publication - à ouvrir toute grande la porte aux volumes qui étudient les Dix Paroles du Décalogue et dont il fut, il y a vingt-cinq ans, les prémices !
