Au cours des premiers siècles de l'ère chrétienne, un certain nombre de textes appelés Apocalypse d'Esdras circulaient parmi les juifs, les chrétiens, les gnostiques et d'autres groupes religieux apparentés. L'original aurait été rédigé en judaïsme ou en araméen et est communément appelé Apocalypse juive d'Esdras, car on pense qu'Esdras était un ancien judaïste. Cette traduction est appelée Apocalypse judaïque d'Esdras, car le livre n'a rien à voir avec le judaïsme moderne. Cette version de l'Apocalypse a été traduite en grec quelque temps avant l'an 200 de notre ère et a été largement diffusée au sein des premières églises chrétiennes. Dans ce livre, il est affirmé que le prophète Esdras a écrit 904 livres, et sa popularité semble avoir inspiré de nombreuses Apocalypses d'Esdras de l'ère chrétienne, à commencer vraisemblablement par l'Apocalypse  latine  d'Esdras qui prétendait être le  deuxième livre du prophète Esdras.  Ce prophète Esdras n'est pas le scribe Esdras des livres d'Esdras, mais un prophète nommé Salathiel qui a vécu quelques siècles plus tôt. Dans l'apocalypse, il est appelé Esdras par l'ange Uriel, ce qui se traduit par  aide  ou  assistant. 

L'Apocalypse latine d'Esdras, plus courte, a été fusionnée avec l'Apocalypse judaïque d'Esdras dans la plupart des traductions catholiques et protestantes. Cependant, les spécialistes divisent les versions catholiques du 4ᵉ Esdras (2ᵉ Esdras protestant) en trois sections, seuls les douze chapitres principaux correspondant aux versions orthodoxe et éthiopienne du livre étant désignés comme le 4ᵉ Esdras. Les deux premiers chapitres, qui ne figurent que dans la version catholique, sont appelés 5ᵉ Esdras, tandis que les deux derniers chapitres figurant dans la version catholique, ainsi que des fragments subsistant dans une ancienne traduction grecque, sont appelés 6ᵉ Esdras. Le 5ᵉ Esdras et le 6ᵉ Esdras semblent avoir constitué à l'origine un seul document, que l'on appelle communément l'Apocalypse latine d'Esdras, bien qu'il soit presque certain qu'elle n'ait pas été rédigée en latin. Il existe une autre Apocalypse grecque d'Esdras qui a été reconstituée par des érudits avec un niveau élevé de certitude sur la base de fragments et de citations anciens, mais il s'agit d'un texte distinct des Apocalypses judaïques ou latines d'Esdras, et qui semble être un composite de l'époque chrétienne de divers documents relatifs à Esdras.

La Vision d'Esdras semble être soit une préquelle de l'Apocalypse grecque, soit un autre remaniement du matériel qui a servi de base aux deux oeuvres. Dans la Vision, Esdras est emmené dans le monde souterrain par les anges du Tartare, puis au ciel où il implore la miséricorde pour ceux qui sont dans le monde souterrain. Le texte semble avoir été écrit par un chrétien copte ou un gnostique, car le monde souterrain est largement inspiré de l'ancien monde souterrain égyptien. Plusieurs éléments uniques du monde souterrain dans la Vision confirment une origine copte, notamment des chiens attaquant les morts, deux grands lions et un immense ver, tous situés à l'horizon occidental.

Cette collection comprend l'Apocalypse judaïque d'Esdras, l'Apocalypse latine d'Esdras, l'Apocalypse grecque d'Esdras, la Vision d'Esdras et l'Apocalypse syriaque d'Esdras, ainsi que l'Apocalypse arabe de Daniel et une reconstitution de l'Apocalyse d'Azarias.
