En el presente libro de investigación se presenta un conjunto de reflexiones teóricas, investigaciones y experiencias concretas en torno a las competencias y su aplicación en el sector educativo, social y organizacional. Los diferentes artículos fueron evaluados por un comité de expertos en el marco del II Congreso Internacional de Experiencias en la Formación y Evaluación de competencias, CIFCOM-2012, realizado en la Riviera Maya, durante el mes de octubre del 2012. Algunos artículos no se presentaron en el congreso sino que se adicionaron como complemento, dada su relevancia. Las competencias tienen diferentes definiciones, pero es importante comprender su sentido general en el ámbito educativo. En este proceso ayuda mucho partir de la definición que nos brinda la Real Academia Española de la Lengua, en la cual las competencias se entienden como idoneidad e incumbencia. Las competencias, en este sentido, son lo que le corresponde hacer a una persona en un área con responsabilidad y calidad. A partir de este planteamiento general, la socioformación define las competencias como actuaciones integrales para resolver problemas del contexto con idoneidad, ética y mejoramiento continuo, en un proceso de innovación y flexibilidad. Esta definición está basada en el pensamiento complejo y busca superar las concepciones de competencias reduccionistas, como aquellas centradas en las tareas, los contenidos y el simple saber hacer. Todos los trabajos que se presentan en este libro parten de un concepto complejo de las competencias, en el sentido de que se asumen como actuaciones integrales y articuladoras de saberes: saber ser, saber hacer y saber conocer, buscando un mejor convivir, consigo mismo, los demás y el entorno ambiental. Esto demuestra un importante avance teórico y metodológico de los autores y las instituciones en las cuales se vienen haciendo estas reflexiones o implementando las experiencias descritas.
