El deseo de entender a los demás y sus mundos no es solo una ambición del antropólogo, sino también de todos aquellos profesionales que, centrados en las relaciones cara a cara, necesitan tanto un conocimiento "intelectualmente crítico" de los propios destinatarios y de su mundo como una conciencia crítica de sus efectos en la interacción con ellos. También la inquietud de quedarse "desarmados" y vulnerables o demasiado involucrados en sus propias prácticas y categorías, en sus propios mundos.Este libro ilustra una vía ejemplar que ofrece la investigación antropológica, asumiendo esa inquietud y vulnerabilidad como constitutivas del gesto de entender.

No se trata solo de corregir el modelo lineal de observación, de colocase lo más posible dentro del mundo observado, sino de pasar a un modelo circular, de reconocer al otro no solo como el que responde las preguntas del antropólogo sino como el que a su vez hace preguntas. Lo que está en juego no es el papel que el investigador quiere asumir, sino la identidad que le atribuyen aquellos con quienes interactúa. ¿Quién eres tú para tus interlocutores? El antropólogo no busca informaciones sino que establece lazos emergentes.

Esas preguntas estuvieron en el centro del modo de pensar el trabajo de campo del antropólogo francés Gérard Althabe, pionero del llamado "giro interpretativo" de los años setenta. Fava retoma y desmenuza esas reflexiones confrontánolas con la tradición de la observación participante, con el análisis institucional y la noción de "implicación" y con las proposiciones del filósofo escocés Alasdair MacIntyre. Su propio trabajo de campo, finalmente, clarifica los alcances y desafíos que esta perspectiva genera.
