Su experiencia etnográfica en un grupo indígena de la Amazonía ecuatoriana, los achuar, su proyección teórica y su elocuente erudición lo convirtieron en una de las figuras emblemáticas de la antropología contemporánea. Entre sus libros se destacan La selva culta (1986) -fruto de su investigación etnográfica acerca de los modos en que los achuar se vinculan con el entorno-; Las lanzas del crepúsculo (1993) que constituye una etnografía reflexiva que muestra el funcionamiento cotidiano de una investigación de campo; Más allá de naturaleza y cultura (2005) -obra magistral sobre las relaciones entre humanos y no-humanos- y La fábrica de las imágenes (2010) -fruto de su ambición de verificar si, en las formas de figuración, podían encontrarse los contrastes presentes en las diversas ontologías desarrolladas en Más allá de naturaleza y cultura.
