About the Book

Der Archaologe, Epigraphiker, Numismatiker und Sammler Heinrich Dressel (Rom 1845 - Teissendorf 1920) ubereignete testamentarisch den Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin seine Sammlung antiker Kleinkunst. Diese hatte er in Rom erworben, bevor er 1885 als Assistent an das Berliner Munzkabinett kam, das er dann von 1897 bis 1919 leitete. Seine Sammlung von 743 antiken Gemmen und Kameen ging 1920 in den Besitz des Antiquariums uber. Ihre Vielfalt an Siegelformen und Steinmaterial, ihre historische und ikonographische Breite sowie ihre Qualitat zeugen von der hohen Kennerschaft, die sich Heinrich Dressel auch auf diesem Gebiet in seinen romischen Jahren erworben hatte. Somit war sie eine wertvolle Bereicherung fur das Gemmenkabinett, das seit der Erwerbung der Sammlung Philipp von Stosch durch den preussischen Konig Friedrich d. Gr. 1764 zu den bedeutendsten in Europa zahlte. 1896 konnte Adolf Furtwangler bereits 11.872 "Geschnittene Steine im Antiquarium" veroffentlichen. Nach der Wiedervereinigung der Berliner Museen und der Sichtung von Bestand und Kriegsverlust des Gemmenkabinetts, das mit 14.600 Objekten immer noch uber die grosste Gemmensammlung in Deutschland verfugt, war die wissenschaftliche Erschliessung der Sammlung Dressel ein Desiderat. Wunschenswert schien eine Publikation auf dem Standard der seinerzeit von der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung Koln geforderten Reihe "Antike Gemmen in Deutschen Sammlungen", in der als Band II. 1969 Erika Zwierlein-Diehl den damals in der West-Berliner Antikenabteilung befindlichen Teil (564 Stuck) vorgelegt hatte. Fur die wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung der Sammlung Dressel konnten wir die Wurzburger Archaologin Carina Weiss gewinnen, die sich mit der Publikation der Sammlung des Architekten und Kunsthistorikers F.J.R. Bergau (1836-1905) im Germanischen Nationalmuseum Nurnberg 1996 als qualifizierte Forscherin gerade der hier geforderten bereiche Glyptik und Geistesgeschichte erwiesen hatte.
