About the Book

If the 2016 presidential campaign has shown us anything, it's that American voters are fed up with politics as usual. They believe establishment politicians from both parties have betrayed them and lied to them. They are worried about the future, and they are angry. In some ways, exaggerated claims and counter-claims from politicians are the inevitable result of our two-party system. But, until the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine, there was a robust media to hold politicians accountable. Journalists like Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite challenged politicians and exposed the truth. But, since the 1980s, voters have been victimized by a perfect storm that has included the end of the Fairness Doctrine, the growth of rightwing radio, budget cuts for traditional news-gathering organizations, increased campaign spending, a deadlocked Federal Elections Commission, and the advent of the Internet. As a result, politicians have been allowed to lie with impunity, leaving American voters wondering who, and what, to believe. In Antidote to Fact-Free Politics, journalist and activist Gary LaMaster exposes many of the lies that have been so oft-repeated that they are accepted as the truth. Through careful research, based on nonpartisan sources, he debunks many of the lies that have fueled voter anger. And he shows that, overwhelmingly, the lies are generated by one end of the political spectrum. If you care about the truth in order to make better- informed decisions in the voting booth, you need to read this book.
About the Author: Gary LaMaster was raised on a farm in Iowa. He graduated with a degree in Journalism from Iowa State University, beginning his career at a small-town newspaper and a mid-market radio and TV station. In 1972, he moved to Minneapolis where he worked as advertising copywriter, helping to build one of the nation's most respected creative agencies. In 1987, he co-founded an ad agency. Throughout his advertising career, he worked for some of the nation's most well-known brands, winning hundreds of awards for creativity, including the industry's highest honors. In addition, he served as a university lecturer and teacher for 20 years. Now semi-retired, he continues to write as an author, journalist and activist. Gary and his wife, Cheryl, currently live in Arizona.
