Intended by Verne as the sequel to Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Author Gordon Pym of Nanatucket.
Set in 1839, eleven years after events in Arthur Gordon Pym. A wealthy American, Jeorling, involved in studies of wildlife on the Kerguelen Islands, is looking for passage back to the USA. Halbrane is one of the first ships to arrive at Kerguelen. Its captain, Len Guy, reluctantly agrees to have Jeorling as a passenger.
Along the way, they find an iceberg bearing the body of a sailor from the Jane. A note found with him indicates Captain William Guy and others from Jane survived an assassination attempt at Tsalal and are still alive.
Len Guy had talked to Jeorling earlier of Pym and reveals himself as the brother of William Guy. He decides to try to rescue Jane's crew. Taking on provisions, they head South with Jeorling still on boardas well as a mysterious sailor named Huntfor undisclosed reasons.
Mild weather allows them to break the pack ice surround the ice-free Antarctic ocean. They find Bennet's islet, where the Jane had made a stop, and finally Tsalal. But the island is deserted, devastated by a recent earthquake; they find only the remains of Tsalal's natives, who apparently died long before the earthquake. And there is no trace of Jane.
