Eine besondere Bedeutung obliegt in diesem Kontext dem Verhalten und der Kundenorientierung der Vertriebsmitarbeiter. Als direkte Schnittstelle zum Kunden stellt der Vertrieb (persönliche Verkauf) heutzutage eine äußerst kritische Ressource dar, die häufig zu dem bedeutendsten Erfolgsfaktor stilisiert wird. Wie in allen Unternehmensbereichen hängen Arbeitsleistung und Arbeitszufriedenheit auch im Vertrieb wesentlich von den Anreizen ab, die ein Unternehmen seinen Mitarbeitern bietet. Wie diese Anreize im persönlichen Verkauf eingesetzt werden können, um den Vertrieb zu steuern und sicherzustellen, daß insbesondere Außendienstmitarbeiter die Unternehmensziele zu ihren eigenen Zielen werden lassen, ist eine häufig diskutierte Fragestellung.
