Damit stellt sich berechtigter Weise die Frage, warum nur einige wenige Unternehmen es geschafft haben, zumindest im Ansatz Wissensmanagement im Unternehmen zu betreiben. Viele renommierte Unternehmen kündigen die Einführung von vielversprechenden Projekten an. Die wahre Herausforderung und häufige Ursache für das Scheitern ehrgeiziger Projekte wird dabei übersehen - die Problematik der Wissensverteilung und der Wissensnutzung. Keine Software kann einem Unternehmen die Arbeit abnehmen herauszufinden, welches Wissen für den Unternehmenserfolg von Interesse ist, wo das Wissen zu finden ist und wie es verteilt werden kann. Bei dem Versuch, diese Aufgaben zu bewältigen, zeigt sich schnell, daß die Lokalisierung und Verteilung von Wissen sehr zeitintensiv und organisatorisch anspruchsvoll ist. Nicht der Aufbau der notwendigen Infrastrukturen stellt Unternehmen vor große Herausforderungen, sondern die Frage nach der freiwilligen Verteilung von Wissen unter den Mitarbeitern. Eine freiwillige Kooperation aller Mitarbeiter im Sinne der Wissensverteilung und Wissensnutzung ist nur mit Hilfe von Anreizsystemen zu erreichen.
