In forza di che si pu� concludere, che per apprendere la scienza ordinata a potenza, conviene discendere dalla sommit� della piramide scientifica, ove risplendono i principii universali, le leggi, i codici, i dommi e le teorie, e ritor nare indietro fino alla base. � d'u0po ritornare sul corso che la scienza ha fatto, per conoscere non solo le sue produzioni ma il suo naturale procedimento, cogliere le subalterne leggi, esaminare le condizioni, investigare le vue, scrutare i modi e ponderare la forza, onde essa si fece effettivamente capace di progredire e perfezionarsi. � d'uopo in una parola riportarsi allo studio dei fatti; non dei fatti semplici e materiali, a guisa degli empirici o dei casisti; ma dei fatti natu rali della scienza, vale a dire dei fatti composti, dove trovasi impressa la forma delle facolt� subiettive ed Operazioni logiche della mente dell'uomo, e dove la scienza discu0pre il suo intimo magistero e la costitutiva sua forza. Se non ogni scienza pu� darsi vanto di un Papiniano o di un Galileo, certo non avvene alcuna che, o per la qualit� dei fatti osservati o per il metodo di osservazione, non offra di se qualche parte esemplare. In tal modo pertanto gli studii pos sono serbare la loro educatrice virt�. Che certo non si educa la mente col presentarle solo vuote e fugaci immagini, e remuovendo perfino la materia e il subietto all'analisi, potentissima motrice dell'umano ingegno; e neppure pu� educarsi, tentando troppo brevi e facili corsi, o discorrendo su troppo ampia superficie. La educazione della mente, non occorrerebbe dirlo, formasi per l'assi dua ed intensa applicazione di ogni sua facolt� e potenza, tale che giova co stringerla quasi in palestra, dove sieno difficolt� e prove da vincere, opposi zioni da superare, esercizii e combattimenti da sostenere, affinch� trovisi in necessit� di trar fuori da se medesima, spiegare e sperimentare tutta la sua forza, e provi quindi il gaudio della vittoria, la esaltazione del trionfo, e van taggiosamente ancora la umiliazione del proprio orgoglio. Ln verit� l'acquisto della scienza non � dissimile da quello della virt�.
