Zahlreiche Publikationen zur Zeitgeschichte streiften in den letzten Jahren das Phänomen des Anlernens von Kriegsgefangenen und Zwangsarbeitern in deutschen Rüstungsbetrieben während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Die Einordnung und Bewertung dieser innerbetrieblichen Maßnahmen war in der Forschung jedoch stets von Unsicherheit geprägt. War das Anlernen eine Initiative weniger Betriebe oder doch ein Instrument der Kriegswirtschaft? Erstmals liefert Ralf Bierod Beispiele aus Rüstungsbetrieben für umfangreiche Programme zum Anlernen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass bis zur Berufung von Albert Speer und Fritz Sauckel ein Handlungsspielraum in dieser Frage bestand. Von Sommer 1942 an ordneten die Arbeitsämter jedoch das Anlernen gegenüber allen Betrieben an und gewannen damit Kontrolle über die Unternehmen. Das vorliegende Buch rückt erstmals die Rolle der Arbeitsämter in der Anlernfrage in den Mittelpunkt und schließt damit eine wesentliche Forschungslücke. Das Anlernen entwickelte sich zum zentralen Instrument der Arbeitsämter zur Heranbildung eines universell verfügbaren Facharbeiterpools. Die Betriebe sollten Fachkräfte ausbilden, die dann von den Arbeitsämtern jederzeit in andere Werke versetzt werden konnten. Dies führte zu Konflikten mit den Betrieben, die nicht verstanden, dass sie über die von ihnen geschulten Ausländer nicht dauerhaft verfügen durften. Manche Betriebe verweigerten deshalb das Anlernen. Andere Unternehmen sahen in den von ihnen geschulten Ausländern dagegen Mitarbeiter und wollten diese nicht mehr der Verfügungsgewalt des Arbeitsamtes überlassen. Jedoch führte das Anlernen nicht zu besseren Lebensbedingungen und schützte die ausländischen Arbeitskräfte in vielen Betrieben nicht vor Gewalt und Tod am Arbeitsplatz. Dokumentiert wird die Praxis des Anlernens am Beispiel von bislang unveröffentlichten Fotos aus Lehrwerkstätten des Werkes Böhlen der Braunkohlenbenzin AG, die 1943 Kriegsgefangene im Metallfach schulte.
