Ainsi peut-il se rendre regulierement a Paris et gagner les gares voisines pour des promenades pedestres qu'il affectionne. En 1867, il epouse Anna Daries. Leur fille, Lucie, nait en 1868. Anna decede en 1880. Hector Malot se remarie l'annee suivante avec Marthe Oudinot de La Faverie (1850-1920), jeune femme alors agee de 31 ans, avec laquelle il accomplit de nombreux voyages. En 1893, un an apres l'ecriture de En famille, nait sa petite-fille Perrine (son prenom est celui de l'heroine du roman). Il se montre un grand-pere attentif et aimant, curieux de noter l'evolution qu'il observe chez l'enfant. De1857a1859, il habite quelque temps avec ses parents, a Moisselles dans le Val-d'Oise, dans la belle propriete de son demi-frere Monsieur Thomas, ou il prepare son roman Les Amants. Malot est journaliste a L'Opinion nationale et son premier livre, Les Amants, parait en18"
