About the Book

Angel is a lively young girl who isn't afraid of much, except bugs! But, her Granny is a bug scientist who loves bugs. One day, Angel helps Granny unpack a mysterious package which changes everything. Together they experience the fascinating world of "metamorphosis" as they watch caterpillars transform into beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. As Angel anticipates the excitement and pressure of competing in a Science Fair, they learn new things about each other and themselves. The bond between granddaughter and grandmother strengthens as they rescue Angel's favorite butterfly, Josie, from a broken wing. This book is based on true facts about insects and nature and uses humour and real life experiences as a teaching tool. Kids are having such a good time they don't even realize they are learning. It is a great resource for parents and teachers whether at home, at grandma's house or in a classroom. Who knew science could be so fun? Read the book and find out how you too can raise butterflies. There have been many books written about the wonders of metamorphosis but none as unique as Angel and Granny's adventure. There is an exciting twist to the story as Granny repairs a broken wing on Angel's painted lady butterfly Josie. This story is different as it is told through the eyes of a child and through many challenges and surprises; Angel overcomes some of her fears about bugs. Near the end of the book, the setting turns from Granny's Exploration Room to the Science Fair at Angel's school. A very unique book that children can relate to while assisting teachers in the classroom with the concept of metamorphosis. A valuable support for parents in helping their children overcomes fears and phobias. What will you learn: - How to raise caterpillars and help them transform into butterflies - How to set up and insect terrarium - How to fix a butterfly's wing - How to be a young scientist-photographs and documenting progress - To grow up without fear or phobias of bugs Who will want this book: - Kids who love bugs - Kids who fear bugs and want to overcome it - Cool parents who want kids to grow up knowing about nature - Great book for granddaughters and grandmothers - Teachers who want to teach their young students about nature - Grandparents who want a story about their relationship - New wave grannies- guaranteed no grannies wearing aprons baking cookies all day. If you loved "From Caterpillar to Butterfly" by Deborah Heiligman, you'll love the Granny and Angel Series. "I recommend Angel and Granny as a fun and informative read. It captivated my six year olds generally occupied attention with its beautifully illustrated pages and expressive language. My daughter now wants an exploration room just like Granny. "Wonderful read, highly recommended for the explorative mind!" Melissa Cletheroe Angel and Granny and The Broken Winged Butterfly has a wonderful storyline that follows a granddaughter becoming reacquainted with her grandmother. Along the way this picture book explains the fascinating process of metamorphosis and enriches its reader with the vocabulary of a butterfly's lifecycle. This storybook is sure to excite our youngest scientists! Rachelle Campbell, Elementary School Teacher I highly recommend this book for curious minds. My 3 year old daughter loved this book! She talked while pointing to the bright illustrations. She was especially interested in Granny's pet spider Rosie. Tanisha Dawn
About the Author: Doreen Funk was born and raised in Boggy Creek Manitoba, a very remote area that was populated with friends and family. Her family had 2 channels on TV, and the highlight of Saturday night was Hockey Night in Canada. She spent many hours reading of faraway places where her imagination could take her on many adventures. Her interest in nature was 'sparked" at an early age since her playground was the open fields, lakes, sloughs and bushes. As a child, she spent many hours exploring under rocks looking for spiders and creepy crawlies, in sloughs hunting for salamanders, tadpoles and frogs, and looking for minnows and leeches in the nearby lakes. As she grew older, she left her treasured playground behind to become an adult. Her fascination for nature was rekindled as she became a mother and saw life once more through the eyes of a child. She was hooked once more on the wonders that nature had to offer. She became an Early Childhood Educator and began working in a large daycare center in the interior of beautiful British Columbia. She found a new playground and began to realize how important it is to share this love of nature with the children in her care as it became apparent that so many children had limited knowledge of their environment which heightened their fears. Her life changed again after becoming a grandmother and as her grandchildren grew she found that they too had fears. By then, she had a lot of experience teaching children about the fascinations of "creepy crawlies" and thought that teaching her grandchildren would be "a walk in the park". But wait, she was a grandmother and with that came expectations. She wasn't supposed to go "bug hunting"! She was suppose to bake cookies with her apron on and stay home in her rocking chair and knit all day. (Although, she does like warm chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven). She soon realized that she had to break the stereotype of how grandparents were depicted and let the world know that kids can have fun with their grandparents as well as benefit from the wisdom that comes with their age. She started writing the Angel and Granny Series with this concept in mind, hoping to accomplish two goals. Teach children and their parents, to respect nature and its beauty and through knowledge, fears can be conquered. As well, to let the world know that grandparent s can be fun, full of life and adventure, and who are just "big kids" and might enjoy flipping a rock to look for bugs too!
