Sie nahm ihren Anfang im Jahre 710, als die ersten Araber von Nordafrika aus südspanischen Boden betraten und bald darauf in Córdoba ein Kalifat etablierten, das 300 Jahre dauerte und eine der schönsten Moscheen der Welt hervorbrachte, die man noch heute besichtigen kann. Der Lebensstandard, die Bildung, die Kunst, die Musik, die städtische Infrastruktur, die Wissenschaft, die Philosophie, Medizin und Astronomie waren in dieser Zeit nirgendwo in ganz Europa so hoch entwickelt wie in Andalusien. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts ist dieses Andalusien zu einer Art Gegenmythos zu Jerusalem geworden. Gilt die Heilige Stadt und der Nahe Osten insgesamt als ein Ort, als eine Region permanenter Streitigkeiten und Kriege zwischen Juden, Christen und Muslime, so avancierte Andalusien zum Hort einer einmaligen und vorbildlichen Symbiose dieser drei Glaubensrichtungen. Verehrer und Verfechter dieses Mythos finden sich bei Musikern (Musikgruppe VOX, Daniel Barenboim und sein West-Östliches Divan Orchester), Dichtern (Heine, Rilke, Federico García Lorca, der 1936 in Córdoba geb. Antonio Gala: Die Handschrift von Granada) und Wissenschaftlern: vom Islamkundler und Theologen William Montgomery Watt (gest. 2006) über den Politologen Claus Leggewie (Alhambra - Der Islam im Westen 1993) bis zu den Romanisten María Rosa Menocal (Die Palme im Westen 2003) und Georg Bossong (2005, 2007). "Andalusien" oder "Alhambra" ist heute ein Symbol, eine Marke, ein Inbegriff für Kulturverständigung, die Harmonie zwischen den Religionen. Die Frage ist: taugt Andalusien als Modell für die Begegnung der Religionen heute?
