About the Book

New York City, 1956. Peter Logan is finishing up the training for his cover job with Calder Oil, annoyed because he is told to get married before leaving on his first assignment. Two months before leaving for Africa he meets and marries Lara Laughton: a stop over in Paris to see his mother and fly south to the Belgian Congo. 1956 to 1961 the United States was pushing governments with colonies to give them independence causing tension in the Congo. It soon became a dangerous place to live and raise a family: 1959 to the Logans' departure in 1961. The family went from hot to cold. Sweden, then Switzerland. Peter had a new cover - Term Oil. Felix Raymon had become his only contact with the Agency. They had met in Egypt, Felix trained Peter for his covert job. And then sent him on a mission to Berlin where Peter became involved in a situation more dangerous than he could handle. He felt caught. After the stress of Africa, Sweden had been calm - returning to Geneva Lara felt the tension return. Peter had changed. In Berlin he had met with a doctor, delivered the package and on his return to the rooming house was picked up by his East German employer. Trapped. As for the doctor, he left immediately for North Africa and a bio-chemical research laboratory working on humans. Sobeke was the doctor's pilot from Wheelus Field (A small U.S. Army base in Libya) to a deserted town near the lab. Sobeke had met Peter and Lara in Cairo when he was the chauffeur for a diplomat and had been involved in finding "volunteers" for the lab. He knew too much, Felix wanted to get rid of him - Sobeke went into hiding. Peter's death on the Tortin, an accident. Lara didn't think so. Someone made his life insurance disappear; with no money Lara moved back to the States with their children and went to work in New York City. She knew she had to wait to make inquiries into Peter's death: the CIA had checked her out. She knew nothing. Ah, the mother-in-law. She was disagreeable with Lara, she did not want to be a grand-mother, disliked her grand-children, controlled her son and daughter-in-law. However, after Peter's death, she paid for a nanny permitting Lara to earn a living. A few years after that Philip encouraged Lara to hire a lawyer and use the Freedom of Information Act to know more about Peter Logan. Who did he work for and why was he killed? The first lawyer was a total loss, the second made a wake-up call. The government did not want the inquiries. It was also at that time Sobeke's hidden plane was found and he went looking for Felix. Lara tried everything - sought information from friends, family, her members of congress. She went to Berlin and left a request for Peter's file with the Stasi. The Brandenburg Gate became an important clue. Then, as a last resort, she sought someone who had learned remote viewing. Terry gave her a long reading describing Peter's trip to Berlin and a research lab in the desert doing biochemical research on humans. Lara researched that subject. Then the F.B.I. took interest in her and she realized she had to disappear to avoid trouble for her family and friends: she wanted to stay alive.
