Excerpt from The Ancient Proprietors of Jones's Hill, Dorchester: Including Brief Sketches of the Jones, Stoughton, Tailer, Wiswall, Moseley, Capen and Holden Families, the Location and Boundaries of Their Estates, &C

Other early owners of land and residents on the hill are included among those about whom the writer has sought information, and brief references to them and their families and estates will be found in the following desultory sketches. A completeness, beyond a careful accuracy of statement, has not been aimed at in any of them - neither time nor facility permitting this; and they are to be taken, by the few readers likely to be interested in their perusal, as disconnected but authentic compilations, mostly from the public records which could alone furnish the information here gathered. Neither is the list given of early land-owners on J ones's Hill complete. It is to be regretted that a careful search at the Suffolk Registry of Deeds and Probate offices furnishes little information about several (among them the Hon. James Allen), who, during the last century, are known to have been owners of parcels of land on the bill. It is also well to say. That it has been no part of the compiler's plan to trace the line of descent in the families treated of down to the present time.

It should be mentioned that much of the contents of this pamphlet has been printed, mostly during the years 1881 and 1882, in the columns of the Dorchester News-gatherer, among whose readers principally it was supposed any interest in the subject would be felt. It has since been thought, however, that whatever of local or historical importance they might possess would be better preserved in a different shape, and a few copies therefore of the collection, with additions, are reprinted in the present form.
