En una nación ficticia del primer mundo, ubicada al sur de Europa, un grupo de terroristas de elevada peligrosidad y que cumplen larga condena, se amotina en la Prisión Estatal, una cárcel de alta seguridad, construida con los mayores avances tecnológicos, arquitectónicos y criminológicos, a fines del Siglo XX. Minutos después de la medianoche, los insurgentes dan un ultimátum para que la autoridad desconecte los dispositivos electrónicos de contención, los guardias depongan la resistencia armada y los dejen abandonar el recinto, de lo contrario amenazan con volar el edificio. Mientras esperan la respuesta de la alcaidía, y liderados por Vladimir -el más temibles de los terroristas- despliegan una sofisticada estrategia de guerrilla psicológica que debilita y pone rápidamente en jaque a los guardias, quienes rompen la neutralidad ética, no tardando en involucrarse emocionalmente, vulnerando así progresivamente la defensa del edificio, declarado como objetivo militar por los insurgentes. Malcom es el leading-role, un guardia de 35 años sin graduación militar. Esencialmente pusilánime, se ha refugiado en la prisión huyendo de sus fantasmas personales: un origen familiar castrador de pueblo pequeño y católico que le ha frenado completamente su desarrollo, una mujer que lo ha traicionado y una actitud permanentemente cobarde frente a la vida. Es él quien mueve la narración y es quien emprende el dramático viaje del héroe que lo transformará en un ser completamente diferente. De ser el gran cobarde del penal, termina poniendo punto final radicalmente a los terroristas. Es devoto de San Judas Tadeo, el santo de los imposibles, creencia que juega un rol muy importante en el desarrollo del relato. Su vida personal tiene puntos de extrema sensibilidad, y del todo conocidos, tanto por sus compañeros de servicio, como por los reos, lo que lo impulsará a tomar una insólita decisión para escapar con vida de la prisión ya tomada por los insurgentes. - John-Byron, guardia recién ingresado al servicio activo del plantel, coprotagonista, 22 años. Muy inteligente y apuesto, por su alto rendimiento en el Seminario de Reintegración Social Feuerstein -que prepara guardias para servir en las distintas cárceles del país- recibió como premio el cursar una pasantía en Israel. Debido a su éxito académico, ha podido elegir su destinación profesional, decidiéndose a brindar servicios en la Prisión Estatal. Desea ser un gran criminólogo en el futuro, sin embargo, acarrea dudas existenciales acerca de su propia identidad, desde la adolescencia. Habiendo recién ingresado a la Prisión Estatal, lo sorprende la asonada de los terroristas. Es ingenuo e idealista, lo que promueve el despertar de Malcolm y logra impactar tenazmente a Vladimir. - Vladimir, protagonista, es quien dirige la acción y el drama, (según Lajos Egri). Líder del amotinamiento, antagonista de Malcolm y de John-Byron, de 43 años, altamente habilidoso, aunque carente de inteligencia emocional: vacío de empatía, psicológicamente frío, sus mecanismos de defensa favoritos son el refugio en la fantasía y la intelectualización. Ha desarrollado una particular filosofía de vida, a la que él denomina neoanarquismo, y con la cual está seguro, puede llegar a obtener el poder político de la nación. Sin embargo, esa visión de sí mismo y de la vida, constituye un sensible talón de Aquiles. Le apodan El Tigre Siberiano, él lo sabe, aunque por temor, nadie se lo dice directamente.
