Zwischen der Sowjetunion und der Volksrepublik China kam es im Laufe der Jahrzehnte nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges zu zahlreichen Konflikten an der etwa 5000km langen gemeinsamen Landgrenze. In erster Linie treten hier die Zwischenfälle am Grenzfluss Ussuri hervor. Im März 1969 kam es auf der Insel Zhenbao (russisch: Damanskij) mehrfach zu Gefechten zwischen russischen und chinesischen Grenzsoldaten. Diese Gefechte sorgten auf der ganzen Welt für Schlagzeilen. Auch in der westdeutschen Presse wurden im März 1969 ausgiebig über sie berichtet und zahlreiche Spekulationen angestellt, denn verlässliche Informationen waren kaum bis gar nicht zu erhalten. Lediglich die sich widersprechenden Protestnoten der sowjetischen und chinesischen Regierungen boten Einblicke in die prekäre Situation am Ussuri: Gegenseitig beschuldigten sich die Staaten, den jeweils anderen in einen Hinterhalt gelockt zu haben. Dies veranlasste einige westdeutsche Journalisten dazu, über die Ausmaße eines eventuellen Krieges und dessen Bedeutung für die Welt, aber auch für Westdeutschland selbst zu spekulieren. Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit den analytischen und/ oder spekulativen Darstellungen der Ereignisse vom März 1969 in ausgewählten Organen der westdeutschen Presse. Hierbei liegt ein Augenmerk auch auf der Untersuchung sprachlicher Mittel, die von den Journalisten verwendet wurden. Wenn Sebastian Haffner im Stern dem sowjetisch-chinesischen Konflikt aufgrund ideologischer Differenzen zwischen den beiden Staaten die "Gnadenlosigkeit eines Religionskrieges" zuschreibt, so bleibt dies nicht ohne Wirkung auf den Leser. Weiterhin werden in diesem Buch Aspekte der Stereotypenforschung aufgegriffen. In den Zeitungs- und Zeitschriftenartikeln werden sowohl die Sowjetunion als auch die Volksrepublik China als "fremd" dargestellt. Im Vergleich zeigt sich jedoch, dass China und seine Bevölkerung im Gegensatz zur Sowjetunion deutlich negativer dargestellt werden, nämlich als ein Land, da
