About the Book

Optimisation problems play an important role in areas of engineering applications. Available optimisation codes are often tailored to special tasks, and due to a minor degree of modularity are hard to apply to other application areas. This leads to a demand for a high degree of modularity, which allows to exchange components or, e.g. to facilitate the parallel execution of the optimisation and simulation-code. This present work deals with the analysis, design and implementation of a distributed system for an optimisation of resource-intensive functions in areas of engineering and scientific applications. Using an example for an optimal satellite positioning, a modular decomposition of an optimisation system is motivated. After that the functional requirements of such a system are analysed. According to this requirement-profile a comparison with existing codes is performed. Additionally, software- engineering requirements are discussed to achieve a high degree of adaptivity and maintainability, which serves as a base to fulfil the functional requirements. From these results acquired the design of such a system --- integrating already existing software components by encapsulating them --- is discussed. The optimisation environment Platon represents a realisation of this design. The optimisation of different mathematical functions as well as selected engineering applications show the performance and the degree of adaptivity of the optimisation environment, which is achieved.
