Am 22. Juni 1928 erschien in der "Frankfurter Zeitung" folgender Beitrag mit dem Titel "Ein Wiedererkennen": "Die russische Filmgesellschaft Moszroprom-Ruß-Film drehte vor kurzem den Film "Der weiße Adler", die die Pogrome in Südrussland vor dem Krieg darstellt und die Haltung der damaligen Polizei brandmarkt. Für die Rolle des berüchtigten Gouverneurs Muratow, der als Urheber dieser Metzeleien gilt, war der Moskauer Schauspieler Kochalow gewonnen worden. Kurz vor der ersten Aufnahme verzichtete jedoch die Filmregie auf seine Mitwirkung, da die Rolle von einem neu entdeckten Darsteller gemimt werden sollte, der dem Gouverneur täuschend ähnlich sah und der für ein geringes Entgelt sich der Gesellschaft verpflichten wollte. In der Uniform eines kaiserlichen Gouverneurs betrat der allen unbekannte Darsteller den Aufnahmeraum und man war gerade dabei die Szene zu drehen, in der Muratow die Deputation der Israeliten empfing, die ihn beschwor, dem weiteren Morden Einhalt zu gebieten. Unter den Komparsen befanden sich zwei jüdische Einwohner der Stadt, die s. Zt. Mitglieder der genannten Deputation gewesen waren. Man hatte die Greise engagiert, um die Aufnahmen noch naturgetreuer und charakteristischer zu gestalten. Plötzlich ertönte ein markerschütternder Schrei. Die beiden Juden hatten in der Person des neuen Schauspielers den wirklichen Muratow erkannt, der aus Not die Rolle seines eigenen "Ich" übernommen hatte, um auf der Leinwand sein früheres Tun wiederzugeben. Brecht nahm dies zur Vorlage für seine kurze Zeit später verfasste Kurzgeschichte, Die Bestie. Brecht verwendet in seiner Kurzgeschichte eine einfache und leicht zu verstehende Sprache - zumindest wird beim ersten Durchlesen der Inhalt sofort verstanden. Allerdings verbirgt sich vieles in dieser Geschichte "zwischen den Zeilen", so dass ein mehrmaliges Lesen erst die tiefere Bedeutung der Erzählung erfassbar macht. Konstanze Eichendorff analysiert die Symbolik und Charaktere der Kurzgeschichte genauestens und zeigt in diesem Buch die versteckten Bedeutungen vom General, Ähnlichen und anderen wichtigen Bestandteilen des Werks von Brecht.
