Die multimedialen Möglichkeiten der Nachfrager sich Transparenz über die Fülle von Angeboten zu verschaffen erhöht die Rivalität um die Marktanteile umso mehr (Kaiser M. O., 2006). Angesicht dieser wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre ist eine Ausrichtung der Unternehmensstrategie zu mehr Kundenorientierung unausweichlich. Entscheidend ist hierbei die Kunden dauerhaft von den angebotenen Leistungen zu überzeugen, um somit eine auf Vertrauen basierende Geschäftsbeziehung aufbauen zu können. Denn nur wenn es einem Unternehmen gelingt seine Käufer permanent und auf einem hohen Niveau zufriedenzustellen, können sich die positiven Effekte einer erfolgreichen Kundenbindung auch in einem langfristigen ökonomischen Erfolg niederschlagen. Folglich stehen nicht allein traditionelle unternehmensspezifische Steuergrößen wie Kosten, Gewinn, Wirtschaftlichkeit etc. im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung, sondern vielmehr erweisen sich Konstrukte wie "Kundenzufriedenheit", "Qualität" und "Kundenloyalität" als Schlüssel zum Erfolg und zur Erlangung von Wettbewerbsvorteilen" (Kaiser M. O., 2006, S. IX). Um eine effiziente Steuerung dieser Erfolgsfaktoren gewährleisten zu können, muss zunächst mit Hilfe der Marktforschung der hohe Bedarf an kundenspezifischen Informationen gedeckt werden. Dabei vertreten Wissenschaftler und Unternehmer gleichermaßen die Meinung, dass die Kundenzufriedenheit als ein zentrales Konstrukt zur Orientierung am Kunden und zur Steuerung einer kundenorientierten Unternehmensführung verstanden werden kann.
