Les attentions qu'en France les femmes imaginent, des hommes les ont pour nous, et les vieillards celles des petites filles. Ce n'est point la femme du banquier qui m'éveille, la femme de l'évêque qui me borde, c'est le banquier lui-même, c'est l'évêque. Si nous ouvrons notre porte un peu vite, un professeur à cheveux blancs, surpris à y clouer une cocarde, s'enfuit désolé par la fenêtre et par les toits. Ou bien ce sont les chirurgiens qui, chaque matin, nous offrent, comme un miroir à leur malade, des illustrés où nous voyons nos portraits, blâmant sévèrement ceux où nous sommes maigres. Ou bien c'est un vieux colonel qui nous envoie par amitié les photographies historiques de sa vie, et sur l'une d'elles, car il fut champion de nage, il est nu. Chacune de nos chambres est dédiée à une promotion de l'Université; j'habite par hasard la chambre 1888, et tous ceux qui passèrent leur examen cet été-là, où justement je naquis, ont le droit d'entrer me voir sans s'annoncer, amenant en fraude leurs amis qui échouèrent. Le soir, chaque soir, banquet. Du perron, un hôte s'avance vers chacun de nous, s'incline, et nous montons par couples à la salle des fêtes. Le commandant donne le bras au Président; pour notre capitaine qui a deux mètres, on a mandé par télégramme du Canada le membre le plus haut du Club (comme on compte ici par pieds et par pouces, on n'arrive pas à savoir quel est le plus grand des deux); et, pour le dernier officier, pour moi, le Bostonien réputé dans le cercle, -quel qu'il soit, on lui doit aujourd'hui ce triomphe, -pour aimer la France avec le plus de passion. C'est un colosse à front têtu, trapu: sous ma main son bras tremble. C'est un petit homme timide, bouleversé, qui doit prononcer un discours, que deux amis géants rattrapent comme il se dérobe, soulèvent, et m'apportent tout droit, pour ne pas troubler ses idées et ses mots, comme une bouteille de vieux whisky. C'est un avocat, un géographe, un professeur; il voit la France comme la perfection de son métier, comme un discours sans paroles, comme un pays étendu sur quatre couches de même épaisseur, comme un enfant portant son âme. C'est un orfèvre: la France est un gros diamant, et son oeil étincelle.
