Die Bürgerrechtsbewegung ist tief in der "amerikanischen Erfahrung" verwurzelt. Die AfroamerikanerInnen im Süden kämpften von Anfang an gegen die Auferlegung eines Kastensystems, genauso wie sie sich zuvor der gegen sie gerichteten Übermacht der Sklaverei widersetzten. Seit jeher unterschieden sich die Ansätze dabei von Grund auf, gab es neben so genannten Integrationisten auch starke separatistische Bewegungen innerhalb der afroamerikanischen Gemeinschaft.Nichtsdestotrotz waren es die Jahre zwischen 1954 und 1968, die den Süden der USA nachhaltig umkrempelten. Dieser Kampf um die Erlangung der Gleichberechtigung nahm eine Vielzahl von Formen an. Angefangen beim langwierigen Kampf vor den Gerichten der USA, führte besonders medienwirksamer Aktivismus zu greifbaren Erfolgen. Dazu zählt der Busboykott von Montgomerygenauso wie unzählige Sit-ins, Wählerregistrierungen oder auch Demonstrationen unter dem Banner des gewaltlosen Widerstandes.Viele Frauen und Männer trugen ihren Teil dazu bei, aber es war Martin Luther King, Jr., der zur Personifizierung der Bewegung wurde. Er gab ihr die Ideologie und war die Personifizierung desdahinter stehenden moralischen Zieles. Gemeinsam mit den Menschen, die ihm folgten, erfüllte King letztlich die Hoffnungen, die in ihn gesetzt wurden.Eine Rückkehr zu der durch Rassentrennung bestimmten Vergangenheit ist heute ausgeschlossen. Die folgenden Jahrzehnte zeigten jedoch, dass Zugang zur Macht alleine nicht zwingend auchsozioökonomische Veränderung mit sich bringt und so gibt es bis heute einerseits eine wohlhabende, bestens ausgebildete und politisch einflussreiche schwarze Mittelklasse und andererseits eine von Hoffnungslosigkeit und Mangel geprägte Gruppe verarmter Schwarzer. Auch im 21. Jahrhundert kann somit noch immer nicht von völliger Gleichberechtigung aller BürgerInnen der Vereinigten Staaten gesprochen werden.
