Course Overview: The course will explore the development of the United States as a nation from colonial times to the present. This story includes the courage showed by the early explorers and the colonists who persevered through extreme hardship with hard work and faith in their God. As the American nation grew, more immigrants were drawn to the promise of the American Dream. Although many were able to benefit from the fruits of their labors, others people groups, like African slaves and Native Americans, struggled under hardship. A new national identity began to be formed, ultimately, coming into conflict with the British hierarchy. Following independence, the new American nation would expand from sea to sea, but also divide from North to South culminating in the Civil War. New freedoms were ensured, but the wounds of the nation would take time to heal. The new century would be one in which America emerged from its isolationist shell to play a large role in world affairs. Throughout each of these events Christianity has played an integral role in the development of the nation and will continue to influence the future course of the United States. About the Author: One of the advantages of being a teacher is I get the summers off! Quite often I can be found drifting down a local river in my kayak with my dog in the front while enjoying the occasional fish on the end of my fishing line! I have seen many incredible things on these fishing trips. Ospreys diving for fish, curious young fawns peering through shoreline reeds and, of course, the many beautiful sunsets reflecting off the water; each of these experiences point to the existence of a creator. How can something (creation) so incredible not be the result of a Creator? These beauties of nature are small miracles that often get lost in the busyness of daily life. We need to take more time to discover how Creation confirms the existence of God. The facts of History, although interesting for some, are only a part of the story and if only a part of the story is told the listener is going to miss out on the true meaning of History. Facts create context to understand deeper themes such as justice, forgiveness, empathy, courage and human nature. For example, if one is to evaluate the role of human nature in World War One that individual needs to understand the causes of the war and also the horrible conditions of life in the trenches. These "facts" of World War One help one to evaluate the deeper theme of human nature. Most importantly, History reveals the need for a Saviour. Much progress has been made throughout history, but our world still struggles with many of the same challenges as the past, albeit in a different form. The evils of the past have been supressed, but evil often reveals itself in new ways in our present world. For example, the trans-Atlantic slave trade has been defeated, however, exploitation of humans in the form of human smuggling and child soldiers in foreign countries continues. Evil has simply taken on a new form. It takes an understanding of God's word and the development of critical thinking skills to see this new form of evil for what it is. "While creation confirms the existence of God, History reveals the need for a Savior."
