"Although Dr. Cain often drank to excess, he had only gathered with his maintenance staff on that particular night for a single beer in their makeshift cocktail lounge, aptly named "Odam's Dungeon." It sat far below the main boiler room and was a private club for blue-collar Custodial Engineers: founded last Century before he had even earned his medical degree. He stumbled upon them one day completely by accident whilst searching out an obscure case file in the oldest part of his hospital's archive lockers. Dr. Cain heard their laughter, then followed it to find the glowing outline of a long-forgotten closet door that was declared unnecessary decades ago. When he turned the knob and appeared before them, Dr. Cain was instantly recognized.
They held up their glasses and happily invited him in as one of the crew by offering cooler chilled Tall Boys. These hardened men admired the dedication it took for him to slice open human skin, and make stressful decisions, all while working twelve-hour shifts in this Hell Hole of a facility. To them, Dr. Cain embodied blue-collar pride, as he was a highly educated professional; often covered with blood and frequently smattered in filth. He made a living with his hands and ignored the hardships while always pulling through; these men respected that, as they admired him. After several months, Dr. Cain became a familiar sight in the underground club of unionized B.Y.O.B. drinkers; however, later, he would be their unwitting downfall.
After holding court with his latest round of "Today's Most Disgusting Case," Dr. Cain gave into peer pressure and had just one more for the road. That last innocent glass of ale was all it took to push his blood alcohol level up past .05 and destroy a lifelong career filled with achievements. People love to watch others fall, and for Dr. Cain, it was a long way down. Once the humiliations that came with being arrested were on display, there was an immediate investigation at his hospital, followed by what soon became a permanent suspension. The Dungeon lay exposed before an unforgiving administration, as many long-term workers were let go, and their union was forced out in favour of private contractors. Dr. Cain could barely look at himself anymore, as destroying the livelihoods of his blue-collar Brothers, came with a pang of unbearable guilt.
A few months later, the physician was a shell of his former self. He spent most of his days wandering around a dark house, drowning in bourbon, and thinking only about the best way to do it; "Rope or gun?" After decades of speaking appearances and published papers, this valiant man had been forgotten by his profession. Dr. Cain felt ready to go, so now it was just a matter of time and courage. After finishing his last swig one day, he began the frustrating task of tying a proper noose while cursed with shaky hands and double vision. When the complex slip knot was complete, he fastened it to an old beam in his kitchen and awkwardly climbed atop a rickety chair. Dr. Cain hung the rope around his neck and tightened its loop. He tried expounding some clever quotes but only managed to babble out incoherent slurs through a dense fog of intoxicants. Then, he stepped out to a point of no return, just when his cell phone began ringing for the first time in weeks."
