- The visual culture of the nineteenth-century -
In this new issue of Amazing Magazine Illustrations, we aim to celebrate the work of an unknown illustrator, as he was an artist who published his illustrations in late 19th century periodicals in the Rio de la Plata.
Several aspects make his illustrations exceptional, not only functional to the context for which they were created. Stripped of their text-image relationship, they retain their expressiveness and beauty, leaving intact their Wham! factor, a concept proposed by Jaleen Grove in his essay "Evaluating Illustrations Aesthetically"
"Visual communication is intended to make you feel something, and feel it strongly, whether it be to make you laugh, shame you into action, horrify, titillate, or put you at ease. The power of the in-the-gut Wham! is what makes people bond with the image, and it is one measure of an illustration's success. Don't be ashamed to fall in love with something corny, gory, sexy, sentimental, funny-the seductiveness, delicious creepiness, guilty pleasure, or what have you is exactly what makes the work relevant and desirable; what makes you identify with it or recoil in horror. How successful -and how beneficial or dangerous- is that?"
This book gathers 100 black and white illustrations. The illustrations were processed with an Ink Sketch effect to highlight the lines of the drawings and remove color saturation. The objective is not to achieve high-quality images, but it responds to an aesthetic intention.
The book comes with a download link. It provides access to both the images and magazines from which the illustrations were obtained.
This allows artists and designers to draw on the original sources to create their own interpretations and bring "new life" to these timeless illustrations.
