Es gibt "nur wenige umfangreiche Studien, die das DDR-Bild der Deutschen in umfassender Weise analysiert haben." Diese Filme liefern uns nur begrenzte Einblicke in das damalige Leben, weil sich die Regierung des Arbeiter- und Bauernstaats politisch auf eben jene Bevölkerungsgruppe beschränkte und kaschierte, dass in ihrem Land auch andere Menschen existierten. Menschen, welche ihre exponierten Stellungen, die ihre Familien über Jahrzehnte und Jahrhunderte hinweg aufgebaut hatten, nicht dem Allgemeinwohl opfern wollten; die Wissen und Kultur auch jenseits der Mauer suchten. Der Roman "Der Turm" von Uwe Tellkamp setzt sich als erster Wenderoman mit genau solchen Menschen auseinander. Die Protagonisten Tellkamps leben in einem Dresdner Villenviertel, das als der "Turm" bezeichnet wird. Sie scheinen in diesem Viertel über der restlichen Bevölkerung Dresdens und der gesamten DDR zu schweben. Die Bewohner des Turms, im Buch "Türmer" genannt, bilden einem homogene Enklave inmitten des Sozialismus. Sie unterhalten Abendgesellschaften mit Hausmusik, laden zu Diskussionsrunden über alte Sagen ein und frönen so der Hochkultur. Ihre Verehrung der Bildung geht so weit, dass die Gesellschaftsordnung in diesem Viertel mit den Worten: "Wer nichts w[eiß], sch[eint] nichts zu gelten." (S.150) beschrieben wird. Die Bezeichnung "Türmer" spielt nicht nur auf die Turmgesellschaft in Goethes "Wilhelm Meister", sondern vor allem auf das Verb "türmen" an. Die Bewohner fliehen also aus der Gesellschaft des Arbeiter- und Bauernstaates, indem sie innerhalb der Grenzen der DDR bürgerliche Werte leben.
