Es bestand die Gesellschaft aber aus insge samt f�nf Menschen, n�mlich zwei Ehepaare und ein Fr�ulein: ein Philosoph und ein Dichter mit ihren Frauen, von denen des Philosophen Malerin war, und eine Schauspielerin.

Der Philosoph war von Geburt ]ude und hatte in merkw�rdiger Weise den bestimmenden Z�gen j�dischen Empfindens und Denkens eines teils durch den Einflu� der Frau, welche christlicher Abstammung war, Inhalte ganz deut scher Art einbilden lassen, andemteils Ziele des philosophischen Ideals vorgestellt, so da� er sich zu einem wunderbar vielf�ltigen Menschen gemacht, dessen Eigenschaften sich um eine au�erordentlich z�he und starke und wie ein d�nner Stahlstab elastisch gewordene Einheit lichkeit ringten. Er hatte einen festen Willen und eine gro�e F�higkeit, sich in das Leben zu finden, indem er dessen Zuf�lliges abstreifte, soweit es ihm nicht genehm war, dem Wesent lichen aber sich anzwang. Daher freute er sich einer gl�cklichen Auffassung des Lebens und eines gro�en Genusses an ihm, und wu�te sich selbst das Fremdeste eigen zu machen und als solches dauernd zu besitzen, wenn es ihm nur gefiel. Durch dieses wandelte er im Laufe der]ahre wichtige Teile seines Menschen, so da� er, wenn man nur seine Inhalte be trachtete, in zehn Jahren etwa ein ganz Anderer wurde; aber die Art war immer die gleiche, seine Form, und in dieser lag die Einheitlich keit, welche diese Aufeinanderfolge zu einem einzigen Menschen machte. Das Wesentliche dieserart aber war der lebendige Drang, gleich das Konkrete zu verlassen, wenn er es kaum ber�hrt, und schnell das Abstrakte zu erreichen; eigene Erfahrung, wie �bermittelte Kenntnis betrachtete er nie als letzten Zweck, und selbst die k�nstlerischen Dinge geno� er nicht lange als die wirklichen Dinge, sondern bald, indem er �ber das Genie�en nachdachte und fast konnte man sagen, da� er in diesem Nach denken vornehmlich geno�. Diese Gem�ts art fand ihren passenden Ausdruck in seiner Philosophie, welche bestrebt war, das Weltbildin Beziehungen aufzul�sen, und das ganze Sein zu verstehen als eine schwebende Kugel von Kr�ften, welche sich gegenseitig leicht und sicher tragen. Die Steine eines gotischen Bogens m�ssen doch immer zwei noch so ge ringe Punkte haben, durch die sie auf der Erde ruhen, m�gen sie auch sonst durch ihr eigenes Streben einander in der hohen Luft halten, nachdem der Meister ihre irdische Schwere durch seinen Willen in himmlischen Drang verwandelt; aber die Kunst wohnt ja auch auf unserer lieben Erde, und nur ihre Sehnsucht hat sie in die H�he; allein das Denken ver mag g�nzlich den Boden zu verlassen: solches war des Philosophen. Hierdurch vermochte er im Gespr�ch in anmutiger Weise zu spielen, indem seinegedanken einander B�lle zuwarfen. Und als ein ganz froher Mensch hatte er oft die sch�nste Freude, n�mlich an sich selbst und seiner Art, und vermochte so durch sein Herz, das nicht schwach und weich war, son dern stark und warm, sich noch mehr mit zu freuen (welches denn die edelste Gabe einer andern Seele an uns ist), wie mit zu leiden.
