A modern novel in an alternate world Turn the clock back to 1972 and another time track. Does Evangeline have the necessary survival skills? Sanctuary Bulletin 511 pictured a safe wonderful 1972 world. Evangeline rode the bus to the walled city, not knowing what to expect and ready to fight any obstacles in her path. She found allies who helped in her determined search. The underground world almost stopped her. Love did not enter into her plan and she pushed it away. A forgotten manuscript, covered with dust, came to light after 42 years. Evangeline and her story appears now to show a world that might yet be the answer to those who need help. REVIEWS: TASWOS. It's like stumbling across a novel written by Robert Heinlein and Zenna Henderson in collaboration. What a good idea for a book club. This is a fun read. Thank you Mariam. This book is a great story. The layers on top add more spice, with fast-moving dialogue and banter between characters, along with some unforeseen twists and turns. . "..Sanctuary" is a great read! Mariam has certainly honed her writing skills to include the fine art of suspense, clear imagery/visualization of the action, and yet subtle guidance into the next scene. About the Author: Mariam Cheshire, at the age of 86, is publishing her first novel. She began writing when she was six and her first rejection came from Liberty magazine. In the third grade. Mariam clearly stated her ambition. "I am going to travel and write." Her stories were scribbled on paper from the wastebasket until she was allowed to use the typewriter. A paper box was filled with rejections, but successes with small magazines kept the typewriter working late on many nights. Writing was never forgotten but other callings beckoned. Marriage at 17 produced a son, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren, ages six to twenty four. Now she and her "Special Love" of 15 years live in downtown Phoenix close to her family. Vocations came along to fill the need. She fibbed to get a job with TWA which started a series of jobs in aviation. A Private Pilot ticket allowed her to bounce Cubs in both Indiana and Florida. As an Airport Operator for Crop Dusting, she had the 'pleasure' of flagging the strips in the Texas cotton fields. A bookkeeping job in a Phoenix travel agency led to hand writing airline tickets (in the days before Sabre). Travel became a Way of Life flying standby to countries around the world. With a backpack carrying only the necessities she landed in the city of her choice and found a hostel or B&B with the bathroom down the hall. Eventually age interfered. The time had come to return to the typewriter which had metamorphosed into a computer. Stories, parts of novels and a few completed novels were waiting to once again find daylight. Mariam loves her computer, loves the words that tell stories and loves rocks. Her days are now filled with sitting on the balcony in the morning turning pretty rocks, or some call them gemstones, into special necklaces. And, as it has been for all of her life, the evenings are at the keyboard. She has two stories waiting to be edited. She hopes, that at 85, she can continue this fun until she reaches 100. Then maybe she will need to slow down. Mariam speaks of a wonderful life - writing - seeking family history in genealogy libraries - flying solo into the blue yonder - flying in airlines to faraway places - photography and printing in her own darkroom - painting oil landscapes with her mother - playing with rocks - and always beautiful love.
