Het vroegtijdige verlies van zijn beide ouders heeft op Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916) een zo sterke indruk gemaakt, dat het heel zijn verdere leven tekende. Zijn officiersopleiding werd een fiasco. Tenslotte wordt hij uit het leger ontslagen, tot zijn kameraden opgeroepen worden en hij ondanks alles toch solidair wil zijn. De stilte en de ruimte van de woestijn in Algerije bekoren hem. Hij onderneemt een ontdekkingsreis door Marokko en komt terug als een ander mens, verdiept, geraakt door het geloof en de vriendschap van islamieten.Marie de Bondy-Moitessier, zijn acht jaar oudere nicht, biedt hem steun. Charles kijkt op naar haar gelovige voorbeeld. Ze leert hem de Parijse parochiepriester Henri Huvelin kennen. Bij een eerste ontmoeting, eind oktober 1886, vraagt deze priester aan Charles om een sprong in het geloof te wagen waardoor hij tot een bekering komt.Marie de Bondy en Henri Huvelin zullen Charles altijd blijven helpen en inspireren. Enkele jaren na zijn bekering treedt hij binnen bij de paters trappisten. Toch voldoet hem dit leven niet. Van 1897 tot 1900 gaat hij het arbeidersleven van Jozef, Maria en Jezus navolgen in Nazaret en bij periodes in Jeruzalem. Steeds rusteloos blijft hij verder zoeken. Hij wordt priester gewijd en keert als missionaris terug naar de islamieten in Algerije. In Beni-Abbès en later te Tamanrasset smeedt hij een hechte band met het Touareg-volk. Tijdens schermutselingen op 1 december 1916 wordt hij vermoord.Een zonderling roepingsverhaal, dat in deze studie wordt belicht vanuit theologische en psychologische hoek. De Nederlandse psychiater dr. A. Terruwe biedt een kader om Foucauld beter te begrijpen vanuit haar inzichten over gemis, bevestiging en groei.Deze studie verscheen in 1987 en wordt nu in de oorspronkelijke vorm heruitgegeven als een hulp voor zoekende gelovigen en vrienden van broeder Charles, die in 2005 zalig verklaard werd door paus Benedictus XVI.Jan Van Raemdonck (1957) is pastoor van de Oost-Vlaamse parochie Zele, van vorming theoloog en historicus. Hij is lid van de Vlaamse Priesterfraterniteit en schreef in 1991 een vervolg op dit boek: Brood om van te leven. Charles de Foucauld en de eucharistie.
