Aus ungewöhnlichen Perspektiven - als Stipendiat und Angehöriger des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes in vielen Ländern der Welt (wie auch nebenberuflich als Töpfer) - hat der Autor die vergangenen sechs Jahrzehnte miterlebt. Immer wieder brachte es ihn in die Mitte des Geschehens: erst als Zuständigen für die neuen DAAD-Austauschprogramme in der Aussöhnung mit Frankreich; dann als Ostasien-Referenten zur Zeit der Öffnung Chinas nach Maos "Kulturrevolution"; besonders aber als Leiter der "Arbeitsstelle Austausch mit der DDR" und des Osteuropareferats während der Phase der "Perestroika", des Falls der Berliner Mauer, der deutschen Einigung und der Neuordnung des UdSSR-Imperiums. Aus der Berichterstattung über diese Ereignisse (und die dazwischen in Frankreich, England, den USA und Japan verbrachten Jahre) treten zwei stillere Themen hervor, die Dierk Stuckenschmidt bis heute beschäftigen: sein Bemühen um eine Bewältigung der unheilvollen deutschen Vergangenheit und - gleichsam als Gegengewicht - die dankbare Begegnung mit der japanischen Kultur.
About the Author: Dierk Stuckenschmidt (geboren 1939) hat als Universitätslektor und als Leiter eines Büros des Bonner Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) in drei Abschnitten insgesamt 14 Jahre lang in Japan gelebt und das Land in ungezählten dienstlichen und privaten Reisen bis in seine letzten Winkel kennengelernt - immer wieder auch, unterstützt von seiner japanischen Ehefrau Yoshie, mit Gruppen deutscher Japanfreunde. Nach seinen Japanbüchern Reisen und Leben in Japan (1976), Japan mit der Seele suchen (1988) und zwei romantischen Fenix-Erzählungen (2002 und 2003) bietet sein "persönlicher Reiseführer" zu Japans 99 irdischen Paradiesen nun die Summe seiner reichen Erfahrungen. Dierk Stuckenschmidt lebt als Töpfer und Schriftsteller in einem Dorf des rheinischen Siebengebirges.
