"Alle müssen sich gegen den Krieg verschwören und ihn gemeinsam verlästern", so ruft uns der Christ und Humanist Erasmus von Rotterdam (gest. 1536) in seiner pazifistischen Hauptschrift "Die Klage des Friedens" (1517) zu. Der antimilitaristische Schweizer Pfarrer, Theologe und religiöse Sozialist Rudolf Liechtenhan (1875-1947) legte fünf Jahre vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in banger Sorge seine jetzt neu edierte Übersetzung der "Querela Pacis" vor. Die vorliegende Ausgabe wird ergänzt durch einen einleitenden Text von Eugen Drewermann, zwei Erasmus-Essays (E. Eisentraut, Stefan Zweig) und eine Bibliographie im Anhang. Wie niemals zuvor in der Geschichte entscheidet sich heute am Friedensruf des Erasmus das Geschick der Einen Menschheit. Papst Franziskus beklagt den neuen "Weltkrieg auf Raten". Das öffentliche Leben wird auf erschreckende Weise von Militarisierung, Aufrüstungspropaganda und Kriegsertüchtigung durchdrungen. Eugen Drewermann konstatiert in seinem Vorwort: "Der Krieg ist 'die allgemeine Krankheit des Erdkreises.' (Erasmus) Oder anders ausgedrückt: er ist in Vorbereitung, Durchführung und ideologischer Rechtfertigung die Geisteskrankheit, der Wahnsinn, die vollendete Verrücktheit des Politischen. Dringend benötigt würde also zur Durchsetzung der einfachsten Forderungen der Vernunft eine von Grund auf wirksame Therapie. Doch jetzt kommt alles noch schlimmer dadurch, daß man die einzige und beste Medizin gegen die paranoische Psychose des Politischen: das Christentum, gerade dieses, in eine Kriegsdroge für Süchtige verwandelt hat." Seit den Tagen des römischen Soldatenkaisers Konstantin (gest. 337) folgen die dem Staat durch mannigfache Privilegien verbundenen Kirchenkomplexe und Bischöfe nicht der Bergpredigt Jesu, sondern den irrationalen militärischen Heilslehren der Regierenden.
