Da sempre, anche se sembrerebbe probabile dal I secolo a.C., si ritiene che il 3 sia il numero perfetto. Pur non condividendo un'affermazione del genere, che a chi scrive sembra più simile ad un cliché, o a una banalità qualsiasi, non posso neanche non sottolineare come il presente volume sia il primo della mia terza trilogia che, assieme alle precedenti (Navigatori e Antropologi), realizza un'opera in nove volumi che potremmo chiamare: Verso l'Ignoto: Geografico, Storico, Culturale. Qui trovano la loro collocazione i personaggi che non figurano nelle altre trilogie, cioè Archeologi, Esploratori e Grandi Viaggiatori, Geologi, Naturalisti, Paletnologi. Li ho inseriti in ordine strettamente cronologico, in base ai continenti da loro "esplorati." Questo volume comprende Europa e Asia. Sarà seguito dall'Africa e, quindi, dalle Americhe e dalle Regioni Polari. Ecco i primi 22 personaggi: Il "padre" dell'etnologia italiana: Luigi Pigorini, grande studioso di scienze antropologiche e fondatore del Museo Nazionale di Preistoria ed Etnografia; Alla scoperta del mitico labirinto. È all'archeologo inglese Sir Arthur Evans cui si devono le principali scoperte della civiltà cretese; Gordon Childe, il padre dell'archeologia preistorica. Uno dei massimi studiosi di scienze umane dell'età contemporanea; Un francescano "ai confini del mondo" fra Giovanni da Pian del Carpine, esploratore e missionario in Mongolia; Il grande viaggiatore medievale di terra e di mare Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Battuta, il "Marco Polo" dei Berberi; Le avventure di un bolognese alla scoperta dell'Arabia felice. All'inizio del XVI secolo si compiva il viaggio leggendario in Oriente e "ai confini del mondo" di Ludovico de Varthema; La scoperta della Beringia (80 anni prima che si chiamasse così...) risale al cosacco Semion Ivanovich Dezhnev, che nel '600 raggiunse la punta estrema dell'Asia e i territori dell'Alaska; Gli avventurosi viaggi attorno al mondo della signora viennese Ida Pfeiffer; "Assurbanipal abitava proprio lì" quando il gentleman Sir Austen Layard, archeologo dilettante, scoprì le rovine di Ninive; La curiosità senza confini della viaggiatrice "vittoriana" Isabella Lucy Bird, la cui salute cagionevole non le impedì di esplorare Paesi ancora ignoti alla cultura occidentale; Ferdinand von Richthofen, zio del "Barone Rosso," il famoso asso dell'aviazione germanica della Grande Guerra. A lui si deve il termine Seidenstraße, la "Via della Seta." 7.000 km di vie carovaniere, che hanno unito Oriente e Occidente, il Pacifico al Mediterraneo; Charles Montagu Doughty, pioniere "cristiano" dell'esplorazione in Arabia e "musa ispiratrice" di Thomas Edward Lawrence (d'Arabia...); Una piccola europea sul Tetto del Mondo: Annie Taylor, missionaria e esploratrice inglese, prima occidentale a visitare il Tibet; Quei "raids" lungo i perduti tracciati della Via della Seta di Sir Aurel Stein, "colosso dell'archeologia e dell'esplorazione asiatica"; L'avventura di un inglese in Tibet: Francis Younghusband, tra i primi occidentali a entrare nella mitica città di Lhasa; Uno svedese sul "Tetto del Mondo" Sven Hedin, uno dei maggiori esploratori di tutti i tempi; Nel complicato scacchiere dell'ex Impero Ottomano la "regina" era una temeraria archeologa inglese: l'esploratrice Gertrude Bell ebbe un ruolo di spicco nella storia mediorientale del primo Novecento; Alexandra David-Néel, esploratrice, spiritualista, buddista, anarchica, libera pensatrice e...
